Ok, here's alittle diversion for us all, straight from my 6th graders latest science project.

Objective: Drop a raw egg from a 2nd story window WITHOUT it breaking
Assignment: You must build a safe enclosure to house the egg. Maximum size is 6cm x 6cm x 6cm.

You CANNOT use:
Bubblewrap
String (to lower the container slowly)
Parachute (again, to lower the container slowly)

You MUST:
Build your own container, ie. cannot use a box, but can build a box yourself.

We already have a few ideas, so pls note this is NOT our way of cheating on our homework, but since it's the egg is a fragile item to be packed, I thought you all might get a kick outta the assignment, since we are all pretty good at packing fragile items to survive even more than a 2 story drop!

Have FUN!

I had to help my daughter with this in S.I. a couple years ago. I cant help you with the cm measurements but Jell-O works! do not put the egg in until the final moment. push it into the center and then seal your container.foam is another option. in fact making the box from foam is a possibility did not think of that until now. good luck!. testing it will make neighbors think you are crazy..that is a free bonus.

Zilvy...You CAN"T give up!!!....Just pretend you ran outta bubblewrap & you gotta ship the item OR face a neg!

breinhold...My first thought was the foam (the think insulation kind that I use for shipping some fragile items)...My second thought was the Jello!..hehehehehehe....Testing day is tomorrow...Most of my neighbors already think I'm a few sandwiches short of a picnic anyway, so I'm not too worried! Should be lots of fun & the best part is scrambled eggs for dinner! YUM!!!

Hardboiling would also do the trick, until the teacher did her "after fall" inspection!

Make a box of foamboard. Position the egg central some card board ribs. Fill the box with water and slowly freeze it real cold - zero or below. The foam board should keep the ice from cracking and the ice will totaly enclose and protect the egg. wipe the egg with vasoline to keep it from sticking to the ice and cracking from the pressure.

Pack the egg in a box and foam it in place with insulating foam.
attach a string to the side of the box with a rubberband only - loop the string back and forth over the top of the box tucking the string under the rubber band each time.
As it falls each time a loop is pulled out from under the rubber band it won't support the full weight but it will slow the box down until the last loop is pulled out about 6 inches from the ground.
