So is it to be "Who's got the biggest baddest Anthrax?"

They always have a reason don't they?

The Pentagon has approved the development of a genetically
modified "super-anthrax" bacteria to test US defences against
biological attack, overriding concerns that the research could
violate a 1972 germ warfare treaty, it was reported yesterday,

According to Milton Leitenberg, an expert on biological warfare
at the University of Maryland, the defence department had
intended to update its vaccine before the September 11 attacks,
but postponed the project after the news was leaked to the
press. After September 11 the plan was "reapproved", Mr
Leitenberg said.

The New York Times said the defence intelligence agency had
been told to develop a potentially more potent form of anthrax to
test the vaccine which the US plans to supply to its own
soldiers. The Pentagon did not respond to requests for comment
yesterday.

Russian scientists first engineered the superbug in the early
1990s and by 1997 are reported to have produced a strain which
overcame their own vaccine in hamsters.

looks that way. unbelievable. I keep thinking of a cartoon illustration long ago by gaham wilson of a soldier standing alone on a devastated lifeless planet with the caption "I think I won"

This makes no sense.
The Bioport facility failed inspections
and two of the reasons I saw that raised red flags for me were asepsis (sterility) and how long some of the vaccine was stored.
If there are basic flaws with the vaccine, how can I trust data from studies using that vaccine?
And why up the ante?

This is how they tested the stuff thirty years ago, but now maybe they'll just spray it over the US and say that bin ladin did it.

From the Movie Dr. Strangelove-

"Mr President we must not allow a mine shaft gap!"

Because the military mind is first and foremost competative and agressive. There is no other option than "upping the ante" if that is how you view everything in us/enemies - win/lose - weak/strong - black/white.

Oh well. They've already sprayed US cities 50 years ago, so what new test can they devise?

Yup - The government regards you with all the worth as a bag of potatoes, or a building full of black postal workers.

hmmm sounds like Stephen Kings -The Stand.

In the book and movie, the Pentagon announcement was to tell the public it was a new strain of anthrax.....

It was really the Super Flu, or Captain Tripps, developed at a secret military base.
But in the book and movie, it got out 'accidently'..

krs, do you know the reason why some of the military refused to be immunized against anthrax? I heard about it but never found out why they didn't want to be vaccinated. Is there some dangerous side effects??

In order to produce a vaccination, you have to produce the strain you're vaccinating against. I don't know of any other way to do it.

Some refused for the same reason that some parents refuse to immunize their kids--fear of the remote chance of a bad reaction to the vaccine. Never thinking that the disease being vaccinated against is far, far worse than such a chance.

I don't know why for sure, but I've heard that the immunization can cause pretty severe reactions, up to and including death. I did see somewhere that they had court marshalled (like....charged) a lot of people for refusing the stuff. Goodbye.

krs, you sure have been saying Goodbye alot lately......is it to denote the end of your post, or are you trying to tell us something?

P.S. Does anyone know if any live bacteria are used in the vaccine?
