Well Sunday I thought I'd do my part to boost the economy and I bought a new computer.

It is a HP, 1.2 Ghz chip, 256 Ram, and windows XP.

IT IS A FAST SYSTEM !! IN FACT, WINDOWS XP LOCKS AND FREEZES UP MUCH FASTER THAN ON MY OLD SYSTEM !!!!

Only 256MB of RAM? Of course it locks up and freezes! What WERE you thinking???

Reamond, I don't know XP (yet) but I know that each windows wants more from a system. My laptop runs NT and has 512-it was almost a necessity. This one uses 98 still, and carries 512 to give it headroom. It makes a big difference when loading things on top of things on top of things. 256 gave slowdowns and out of memory messages. Windows chows down on memory.

This is the one you have to register right?
I won't buy a system I can't load and control without contacting MS.

Yes, this is the Big Brother Edition, the one that you can't even put on another of your own computers.

However, cracked XP versions that work have been available online for months. Never underestimate the powers of a bored teenager.

I had an Aptiva 32MB and had to turn it off and unplug it several times a day just to keep it running.

I just bought a Sony 1.8 with 512MB and 80GB Hard Drive with XP and if I have your experience, Reamond, I will go completely insane!!!

I haven't installed it yet because I'm trying to figure out how to save some information from the Aptiva. I think I'll just throw it out and start over.

You can do it using USB cabling and the windows software too. You set up a network.

James,

From the aloha site...

"You know jack about the PC and have absolutely no idea how to move your stuff from your old machine to that brand-new one you just bought. It doesn't matter"

Aloha Bob!...that sounds like what I need.

Krs

Me? Set up a network? LoL

you use the net by making a connection if there's separate addresses, or you just use file sharing in the network in settings. It'll wizard you through either one.

Don't know if all system settings and that can be transfered this way as that bob dealy would do, but for files and folders it works fine once you get the hang of it.

Yeah Ken - what is an URL or something to help we mildly challenged to do that? I just got a AMD K6 300 at garage sale for (I swear) $2.50 and would love to hook it to my regular box that way.
I hope you are not building up to a farewell with these goodbyes. Are you planning a trip to your woodsy retreat when they start mailing out really nasty pathogens? I would not put it past you to put on your turban and go collect the reward money if you get really pissed. I have this vision of you laying unblinking under a rock colored tarp a half mile from a cave mouth with a bull barrel sticking out like the finger of death.

So I can just turn on file sharing, hook them up with a USB and transfer? That simple?

I doubt that it will work with an early windows version, gravid. I think that it first became a feature with 98 and is embellished in NT. It's designed for business use--file sharing between workstations and transfers to laptops, presumably so that roving representatives can up and down load data to home base systems. That doesn't stop private users from using it as well. It's under the network icon in settings as I said, but there's probably more info at microsoft.

I use it to load up my laptop before I leave now, but I used something similar that was locally established when I worked. Locally established means that our own company MIS people set it up and I just went to it to be able to transfer work done in my desktop to a laptop to take with me for out of town cases.

Starting digging--you'll find something to help your particular situation.

Umm, not quite that simple, but simple enough. Look at the file sharing capability and see if it fits with what you use. You'd have to have windows activate the feature anyway and that's where you do that. No harm in turning it on even if you end up not using it.

Thing is, I'm going to have to leave and this could get involved. There's probably as many ways to screw it up as there are with other things.

Windows XP will work without connecting to the internet- at least it does so far.

I am keeping my old Win98 system PC on the cable connection, and keeping the new XP system isolated from the net.

I'll tell you though for $1097 after straight rebates it is not a bad outfit which is a PC, 17" mon with built-in mic, and 845C printer, the speakers suck, but are easy to replace. It also came with a DVD drive, a CD-RW drive, 40 gig HD, and firewire cons with one right in the front of the box and set up for video loads and 2 in the back. It also has a 10/100 ether net card installed.

Ken got me looking so here is an easy way to do it with a $45 cable. Cheap enough.

Thanks for getting me started.

Gravid, if you get the correct configuration of cable needed etched in memory I think you can beat that price by far in ebay. A local place wanted $48. for the one I needed a while ago, and I bought one at auction for [I think it was] $8.00 + shipping. Support your ebay peddler!

I guess USB Lan cable does not equal plain old USB cable?

No - They are different - at least to the extent of being male to male. But it is true $45 seems high for any cable. Supporting my fellow peddlers is a good idea. I'll try USB lan for a search.

Edited to say I found so much it is hard to pick. I might go with a phone line network.
USB to phone to USB. That would work for me.
