For an open discussion board, I think the RT people are pretty good at self-moderation. What do you think?

P.S. I will miss the moderators, but I hope you will all come back and tell us what's happening in your lives.

There are some very strong personalities here, and I have no doubt they could handle "self moderation" - problem is some of them are leaving...

kraftdinner - From what I have read in your postings, I have no doubt you could.

Hey nanandme, there might not be as many leaving as you think. Alot of them were under the impression the forums were going to be closed, then we'd all be out of a home. At least the outcome isn't so harsh, but I still don't understand the credit card thing!?

I don't understand it either - I have met some great people here and hope they all don't bail out...

Now on the other hand, I could give you a list of people that really don't matter (a wink, because I don't know how to do the smiley thing)

I wonder if our lists would be the same?

a smile - : and )
a wink - ; and)
a laugh - : and D
a frown - : and (

(Take out the ands.)

The AW boards used to be self-moderated.

Many people just don't have the desire or ability to moderate themselves. Things got pretty vicious and that is why moderators were brought in in the first place.

The board can certainly survive without moderators, but we'll have a lot more fights, a lot more intolerance, a lot more put-downs, and less variety in posters as some lurkers will never post for fear of being "ganged up" on and others leave after it happens to them.

bunni - Maybe we should have elections for who will be Moderator of the Month.

Oh me, me it sounds like it would be just about as painful as catching a bowling ball in your teeth...a moderator with NO moderating power!! Whooo eeee!!

I have yet to see it work, KD.

I belong to a few boards that are unmoderated.
Even though they all have the same basic interests (art) the conversations can turn pretty ugly.
Some people just don't believe in having civil discussions. They can not be disagreed with without resorting to name calling and personnal insults. Thier insecurities come out and they become verbal terrorists. "If I'm not having a good time nobody is going to have a good time" seems to be the attitude.
We have even had a few cases of some pretty nasty emails being sent out by these people to the whole list. (virus, threats, vile language even I had never heard.)
I wouldn't waste my time on one of these boards again.

I don't quite know why this came to my mind after so many years. It's totally unrelated to the format here.

(Contains some offensive material.)

At any rate, it's a well known incident that should not be forgotten.

"The AW boards used to be self-moderated".

Not true, bunni. Mark walked a beat, and the lovely Diana moderated before being elevated above the mist to the clouds.

You forgot Witchywoman, Ken. She left within a couple of days of my starting to post. Hmmmm....

Sorry Meya. I guess I assumed many would remember it.

Basically, someone used software in that environment to manupliate the actions of others which led to people being seriously harmed emotionally in RL.

I guess my thought was "identity protection" as it relates here...as in you are your id more or less. (I hope Diana is familar with it at a minimum.)

Irene.

I remember when you first began posting. We were all young and innocent then. Well, innocent anyway. Lol.

I used a signature line for a brief time -- "Where all think alike, no one thinks very much." -- and you were compimentary about it.
I immediately fell in love, platonically at least, and have never been disappointed since.

Why thank you, Dan.

I remember the first board fight I witnessed after I registered. Amy, Glenda, and Ross were going at it, hammer and tong (Glenda was winning I think).

Coming from the civility of Canadians on the eBay Canada board, I was quite outraged at the rowdiness of all these strange Americans (I'd only had a short taste of it as a VERY brief lurker on the DNF board when guns were banned). I immediately made a beeline for the thread that someone started demanding Mark institute an "ignore" feature. He did about a month later. Somehow, I never got around to using it....

How about related posters! I checked out an unmoderated family name board in a genealogy forum. Just visited three times and I thought they were going to kill each other!

I imagined the hate emails..."To my cousin, ten times removed, I will spam you to death!"

Next week ought to be interesting.

How long have all of you had internet access?
Just wondered what the average was here.

Yes, Irene, I remember the great demands for the ignore feature. And then we did marvelous spoofs about it. I've never used it either and often wondered if anyone, in truth, ever did, except perhaps briefly. I remember experimenting initially to see how it worked, though I can't remember who I selected to ignore.

I was wondering that my self. I played in the Fido Net forums back in the 80's....

Truley unmoderated forums are normally flame pits.

But my take was they where going to "police on demand" so to speak.

Oh thank you Microbes. Liked your photo btw.

I have been here for about 12 years and at AW for around 4.

It annoys me to no end when people I know who got access a week ago CALL ME ON THE PHONE to tell me some SPAM that I heard 9 years ago. Know what I mean? If they called me to talk about something ELSE, it would be DELIGHTFUL.

And if I ever MURDER anyone it will be over a chain letter and they will have incorrectly assumed that I would be hanging on the edge of my seat to read it.

No, I don't think it will work. Look what's happened to the unmoderated boards in the last few months. They now either have moderation or have gone private.

AW knows about the other places so they know it won't work. I think it's a ploy just to get rid of us. They thought we would all leave when they started charging for services, but we fooled them and stayed.

Technically, I have you beat, Terry!

I can truthfully say I have been on-line since 1984 or 1985 when I bought a Radio Shack laptop (with whopping 30K hard drive, 300 baud modem and tiny, tiny screen). The computer came with Compuserve software and I checked it out. Compuserve was text-based back then and it was a very frustrating experience trying to find anything, particularly with my tiny screen. I gave up after about an hour.

I came back on-line in 1994. I did sign up for some unmoderated news groups. Posters were always very polite, because they were mostly spammers. Spammers are usually civil because they are trying to sell you stuff.
