I sent my grandchild a Halloween card with a square piece of gum as a 'treat'...
Before sending I asked local post office if there would be a problem sending the gum in the card?
She said no, they'd just hand stamp it.
Today it 2 (I sent 4) of the cards arrived in Sacramento, CA...MINUSthe gum!
There was a cut on the seam of 1 1/2"..and NO GUM inside...on BOTH cards mailed separately.
The PO didn't reseal the small cut..nor did they stamp it that it'd been looked at or anything.
If my son hadn't known I had included gum he and my grandbabies would have thought I only sent a card..
My older grandson I sent 2 pokemon packs..wonder if they took that out too?
I just don't KNOW what to figure. Couldn't they have put the gum BACK when they saw what it was???

Obviously they are looking at any object or bulk in an envelope as a danger and are not about to tell everyone what they are rejecting. I would also suggest that it was surprising that they even recieved the emptied envelopes. I would almost consider it a courtesy. I mailed a bunch of kitchen timersa after the WTC attack and they simply vanished. I assume they are in a landfill somewhere with a whole lot of other things that were quickly scanned by x-ray or other means and anything that raised the least doubt discarded.
A package such as you are discribing could be slit also by workers looking for jewelry or coins as gifts to people. They may assume you are using the gum as a carrier for LSD or similar substances also.

Priority Mail (eBay) item took EIGHT DAYS to get from Pennsylvania to So.Cal. last week. The P.O. is still advertizing and charging for 2-3 day service, but not providing it, nor issuing refunds. FedEx & UPS for me from now on.

True, Mr.P. And now that it takes a Priority Mail package LONGER to reach its destination than Media Mail, I'm washing my hands (uh, no levity intended) of them. Okay with you?

I have been sending most of my packages FedEx Ground and I am getting all sorts of compliments on the fast delivery - 2 to 3 days in most cases even all the way to the west coast from MI.

Consider yourself fortunate, Dman. It *did* occur to me that the originating P.O. might have been one of those involved in an anthrax scare (never found out). In any case, I'll be tagging along with Gravid for a while and stipulating FedEx (or UPS) in the near future.
Dman, let me ask you something: If you had a high bidder approach you after one of your auctions had ended, wanting you to use their preferred method of delivery (which you might not have listed as a shipping option in your auction description) would you grant their wishes, provided they were willing to incur whatever shipping costs were involved?
