It may be sooner for me. I've got an unusually busy week ahead AND I'll be waiting on the tom paw and paw after his eye surgery tomorrow. I love 'im, but I'm a crappy maidservant.

I am sorry about Tom Shadowcat. I hope it goes well.

He's getting that surgery that will allow him to shuck his Coke-bottle bottom glasses. It's an in and out procedure but he'll be unable to see well for about a week.

I've got him under strict orders to accept any pain meds offered so I don't have to listen to any sudden sucking in of breath every time he blinks(He's such a stoic when it comes to pain).

Er-we *can* say "Coke", can't we? Or should I use "Coke brand-name"?

At first I thought you were talking about a cat, but then I wondered, and now I know. All the more sorry then that he has to go through this. My aunt had that surgery not too long ago and it turned out perfect. The cornea heals very quickly as I understand it so maybe he will feel better pretty quickly.

My eyesight is very poor without correction though I don't wear "Coke bottle glasses". I am very protective and squemish with my eyes because sight being my physical weakness is so very important to me. I can't drive or even read without correction and at night I feel very insecure and blind. I do understand someone wanting to go through with surgery but it also puts fear though me to think about it. You stay RIGHT there so he isn't "alone" in the dark, ok?

Sorry to change the subject.

Does anyone know anything about the Appalachian Trail near the NC, TN border? Like has anyone hiked it?

Shadowcat: Are you talking about Lasik surgery? I, too, had "coke bottle" glasses--and an astigmatism as well. I underwent Lasik surgery--and had great vision soon after the surgery (could see clear across the room & read a clock) and by the next day wonderful vision. And absolutely no pain at all--not even the "scratchiness" I was told most people feel. For the 24 hours he will have clear plastic protective covers for the eyes--after that he'll only have to wear them to bed for the next week (to prevent him from rubbing his eyes in his sleep). After that--voila! --great vision. That, and regular visits to the optometrist to check vision for the next year.

Bunnicula: Yeah, that's the surgery. One of his co-workers had the surgery and she had pain and blurred vision for a week post-op. I hope his goes as well as yours.

He's so eager to be able to putter about without his glasses.

jt - There is a book "A Walk in the Woods" about the trail you would enjoy.
I like hiking out west where there are few people but the trail in the east is so close to long standing habitation that there have been an uncomfortable number of assaults and robberies on it. I would not walk it without a good pistol I was experienced using so basically I would not do that as it is my policy now not to go places I feel that way.

excuse me for interjecting...

Shadowcat, I'd been hoping to catch up with you in a thread somewhere ever since I read the other day the news you shared about your cancer diagnosis. I'm so sorry Shadowcat. I hope you beat it, and really whup it's behind, actually. You positive attitude and strength are so inspiring. I can only offer my prayers, support and encouragement. I will pray for you often if that's ok with you.

sorry for the interruption on this thread.

I've hiked a good bit of the AT along the NC/TN border this year. Its lovely -- all panoramic views and blueberries and so on. Saw a couple large snakes, quit early one day when we came to the "Warning: Agressive Bears" sign, and so on. Our plan is to hike the AT from Georgia to Maine when my kids head off to college in a few years.

Hi Jen.
I am interested specifically in Devil's Fork Gap at HWY 208 which I understand is a little used area of the trail. I notice that it is at 3100' elevation. Do you know that area? I am not familiar with conditions at various elevations, etc. Do you know what 208 is like at the border at Devils Fork? I found this, 800' from the trail there which looks sort of cozy.

I am thinking...
Can I get to the post office in winter from here?

Is a bear going to eat me if I go out to burn the trash at night?

Can my soon-to-have-learner's-permit learn to drive on this road?

Is this winter ice hell?

That sort of thing...

You know anything about this particular spot?

I did download the trail guide for that area but it says stuff like "apple tree on left", "rock that looks like a giant guina pig", "barbed wire fence on right", etc. Not exactly what I need to know.

Thanks!

Heya, Terri.

My guess is that getting down from there during the snows each winter would be difficult (but probably not impossible). In general, the roads through the mountains at that elevation here close when snow happens. We're lucky enough to live one house before the end of where the snow plows hit when it snows. Out in the middle of nowhere -- but just shy of where the county says "no roads for you today".

I'd be glad to head out hiking in that area this week and see what I think more specifically. We've got company coming and I'd be trying to decide where to take 'em.

I will e-mail you the street address just in case you are in the area Jen.

Remember to take your camera to photo your friends on their hike.

Kodak moments...

One more thing, you don't happen to know the rules on hunting/trapping in the National Forest do you? Hubby has me on a new search for that.

Hi, Irene. Kevin's place was my favourite for good marketing discussions and in depth business talk. I lost my bookmark so I'm not even sure if folks are still chattin' there or not now.

Terri, its really not all that far from us (we'd expect to travel further on a typical buying day here...) so dropping by shouldn't be a big deal. I've already let my husband know we should plan a hike in the area sometime this week. I try to always remember my camera when we walk -- our family so enjoys a chance to see us given the infrequency of our visits. On hunting/trapping on park service land -- I'd been of the impression that it was a no-no but I'm not sure. Our neighbors hunt locally (as well as in GA and TN) so I'll ask them and see what I can find out.

http://NCNatural.com/NCUSFS/fishhunt.html

Just found that. It says you can hunt and fish according to rules. Doesn't mention trapping so maybe it isn't allowed.

One thing we liked about this house is that even though it's only 2+ acres, it is bordered on 3 sides by National Forest...and in theory I could walk out the back door and walk to Maine without getting lost.

Thanks Jen! You are a sweetheart!
