My friend just told me her Mom called her from Ohio and told her the U.S. is on "High State of Alert", that "something else big is happening" but it was not said WHAT it is. (What a shock.) She said President Shrub will be speaking about it on TV tonight. ? Anyone hear ANYTHING??? These little tiny crumbs of "news" really get me peeved, but, I won't go there right now. Just wondering if anyone's heard anything.

Hi - Rocker - Short of it is they have "credible" warning someone may try another attack real soon but no word on who and where or what. This is the kind of thing you get from human intelligence where a guy can warn you that he sees people moving money or equipment and sees higher ups meeting or traveling but he is not high enough up to be told why that is happening.

Glad to see you. - Sorry if I offended you before you left earlier. It was not an intention to be unkind or discriminate.

Hey thanks nebula! So, nothing "new" really. If anything were really about to happen, we'd know it, cos surely we would see Tourist Guy hanging around.

I just saw a news report where they basically said that their sources are, um, sort of credible. Kind of like a prison stoolie.

Hi rocker, as if we haven't been on high alert since 9-11! Then they say we don't know when or where could be in US could be in another country. Well, that's really helpful isn't it?

I'm getting really worried about how Bush and gang are handling all this. From what I've been hearing about the war it's not going well. The CIA, FBI, and states are fighting about sharing information. I don't think they have control over this Anthax thing, and they look like they're running scared.

OT - rocker did you read my response to you about the the Pride Parade in San Franciso? Things went down hill and I think you left soon after I posted.

The CIA, FBI, and states are fighting about sharing information. I don't think they have control over this Anthax thing, and they look like they're running scared.

And I worry that you just put your finger on why we're on "High Alert" status. The suspicious part of me wonders if they issue these warnings as a way to keep Americans from thinking too hard about the lack of success on the Afghani front (they've bombed the same Red Cross building by mistake three times now) and their complete inability to halt the spread of anthrax, or to catch the perpetrators.

Hypothetically, by issuing these periodic warnings -- and never detailing what the specific threat is -- they manage to keep Americans scared, and scared people aren't likely to question or protest their government's actions. Then, after nothing happens, the government takes credit for having "possibly averted a potential terrorist act." Win-win for the government.

If that's what they're doing. At this point I'm not sure. But whether or not the high alert is justified, I think people are going to get tired of these Although we can't give you any details, terrorists may strike at any time -- but go about your normal lives, go shopping scenarios.

Ours is a results-oriented culture. So far we're not seeing any. I think the government's in a tough spot. If they don't bring down the Taliban soon, or if people keep dying of anthrax, I think the public will begin to lose its patience.

If anything's going to happen, I would wager it will happen on Halloween. Bin Laden's men could march in the Greenwich Village Halloween parade and nobody would ever know.

Actually I appreciate an honest warning rather than noy saying anything. They could justify saying nothing because it might reduce air travel etc.

I am taking some measures - buying some equipment and supplies in case a smallpox attack happens, and it is in our best interests to spend as little time in contact with people in public as possible.

I already have radiation detecting equipment and protection that can be worn through a contaiminated area.

When they have a handheld unit for sale that will detect an unusual amount of bacteria in the air or specific strains on surfaces or the air I will buy it.

My question is quite simple.

Are these threats real or just propaganda to keep everyone from jumping ship in this war effort thing? I'm a bit skeptical.

Threat Diverts American Flight 785

By CHRISTOPHER NEWTON
.c The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) - An American Airlines plane made an unscheduled landing at Washington Dulles International Airport on Monday night after a threatening note was found aboard, according to airport officials. Passengers used emergency slides to leave the aircraft.

The Boeing 757 plane, American Flight 785 enroute to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport from New York's La Guardia Airport, landed just after 7 p.m., according to airport officials.

``There was a threat and it is being investigated,'' said Paul Malandrino, an operations manager at Dulles International. ``Everyone is safe. The passengers are off the airplane.''

The threat was made in a note found on board, according to an airport official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The FBI is investigating the threat, but bureau spokesmen Chris Murray would not comment on whether it was genuine or if the plane was ever in any danger.

The airport continued to operate normally, with planes landing and taking off on schedule. American Airlines spokesman Gus Whitcomb would not comment on why the airplane was diverted.

rachelcrisscross - I don't really know much about what is forbidden to the signatories of the Convention. Do you have a URL or want to tell us more?

I know it forbids shotguns dum-dum bullets and says how you have to treat prisoners of war.

Seems like atomic bombs would almost automatically be a violation by wiping such a huge uncontrolled area.

I'm naturally skeptical also. However, my sister recently attended a meeting led by Mr. X. Mr. X's wife had been told by one of her employees "don't go to *****on Oct.**, the ****will be blown up." This employee didn't come back to work. Mrs. X reported the threat to the FBI and my sister says that the guy is on the "most wanted" list. The FBI may get many of these calls - threats that seem credible.

gravid - rumsfield said it was on the target list and forgot to take it off - but according to geneva con. rules - it shouldn't ever have been on any target list...

there are most likely articles - but I heard rumsfield say how it was a mistake and not taken off the target list - a couple of hours ago on t.v. on cnn...

If I can find an article online quoting him somewhere and if I can get back here in time to post it...will do...

geneva convention rules are posted somewhere around but I don't have a link at the moment...

I think people underestimate how hard it is to destroy the average Red Cross warehouse. I don't think three attempts is too far out of line.

They get many of these types of reports daily even long before sept 11, They are just takeing some more seriously now and reporting and passing the warnings on to the public ..

Much of these warning before 9/11 never would have been seen or heard by the public and all would have went on like any other day.

Want next week to be like any day before 9/11 turn off the news, the world hasn't been the same since the country let the media control its ever emotion and fear for the week and day to come..

Live for the day and the moment no one ever promised anyone there would be a Tomorrow any how take them as they come

Chicken Little?

Conspiracy theories (prophecy doesn't count) are NOT my thing even if I have joked about them. I am generally trusting and skeptical. UFOs do not exist.

But something isn't right here.

I just have this gut feeling and it really kicked in when on top of the proposal to rerouting the internet through two hubs so it could be monitored, on top of this new police law thing which was done quickly with offices closed, on top of the fact that the first alert was named skyfall.html, and on top the the fact they issue a new warning and will not substantiate it, BUSH ANNOUNCES THAT HE WILL GO TO THE WORLD SERIES?

http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/32792.htm

I certainly don't think it's "war mistake correction", I don't believe Bush is behind it or perhaps is even aware of it, but something just is not right. I don't even have a "theory", I just have a gut feeling.

I also wonder if this terrorist warning, "a hight alert," is a diversionary tatic. The war is not going well. Now, the Pentagon is putting out a suggestion box...UNBELIEVABLE!!!

http://www.nytimes.com/2001/10/28/opinion/28DOWD.html

From The New York Times...

After six weeks of a war at home and a war in Asia, we now understand what we do not understand. The terrorists and Taliban have the psychological edge on three fronts: military, propaganda and bioterror.

And even as Rear Adm. Stufflebeem denied we were getting bogged down over there — always a sure sign we're getting bogged down over there — the Pentagon issued a disconcerting plea. "Pentagon Seeks Ideas on Combating Terrorism," read the press release, saying the U.S. "specifically needs help in combating terrorism . . . conducting protracted operations in remote areas, and developing countermeasures to weapons of mass destruction," and soliciting ideas from any Tom, Dick & Goofball for possible defense contracts.

Six weeks into the war on terrorism, and they're putting out a suggestion box!

Choco - Thank you for reminding me re: SF Pride!! Yes I meant to respond to you about that, thank you again. I have really been wanting to go, it sounds great, and SF is my FAVORITE city... after NEW YORK, that is! Choco do you live in SF? I will be there in the end of November to work on another show... if the Gods are willing, that is.

Well like you said, AS IF we haven't been on high alert since 9/11, right!?!? Ya know, we had a tiny earthquake here a couple nights ago... now I know 2.6 on the scale is a WIMP earthquake to you Californians heehee - but lemme tell ya, I about jumped out of my skin. Of course the first thing I thought was that it was another attack. I ran into my upstairs neighbor in his pajamas (how I got into his pajamas I'll never know) but we had no idea what it was, so we gave up, and went back inside again. Us New Yorkers have had enough problems lately with our STARTLE REFLEXES if ya get my drift. It's a scary statement about the times we are living in when you can seriously say "I thought it was another terrorist attack, but it was only an earthquake."
