Governor of CA says four bridges in CA threatened. Two bridges in Southern CA and also the Bay Bridge along with the GG Bridge.

I just caught a fragment of this story today but not enough yet to tell what it was all about. I remember that early on there was speculation that the GG was a potential target. Has more information come to light?

This article summarizes what I just heard live on Fox cable news:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/americas/newsid_1633000/1633387.stm

4 bridges... Golden Gate and Bay Bridge in SF, Vincent Thomas between San Pedro and Long Beach in the Los Angeles area, and Coronado bridge in San Diego

Thanks, enchanted.
Doesn't really give much detail. I wonder what he means by credible sources. I guess probably CIA or FBI.

I heard that the FBI is upset because the Governor knew about the information first.

Now that's interesting, Helen. Do you mean that Davis knew before the FBI?

It is interesting, I just heard another live report on Fox a few minutes ago that Gov Gray Davis released the report and "the FBI and Justice Department are currently trying to verify the credibility of the threats".

I guess they're not going to just take Gov Davis's word for it.

I've become a total news junkie since September 11th.

Yes, you almost have to become a news junkie to try to keep up with what's going on. But I've begun completely divorcing myself from media coverage about every third day or so, for sanity's sake, and then try to catch up.

I wonder what his credible sources were that made him certain enough of a threat to announce it publically. Maybe the CIA and FBI are still not working together?

Yes, Davis knew first and failed to go through the chain of command. He revealed the "news" before telling Rich...so Rich and the FBI were out of the loop.

This came from the FBI. You're close Antiquary. But it's the Justice Department and the FBI. Anyhoo...it's still CYA. Ya just never know.

Actually, Helen. Davis didn't know first. He was notified at the same time as local law authorities. It came from the FBI.

Katy, I would trust you before I'd trust CNN.

Do you live close to any bridges?

I've noticed that a lot of the initial reports turn out to flawed or just rumors. Not necessarily in this case, but just in general, the news channels are so anxious to get the story to the public that reports (rumors) aren't always verified as thoroughly as they need to be, or the story changes as it "develops".

I think it contributes to the atmosphere of general uncertainty and doubt.

Ugggh, who you going to believe? Do they know more than they want to admit? Is Davis being a bad boy, by not going by the food chain? Is he still mad at Bush? Should he have said anything or not?

In that case I'd believe KatyD. She has an inside source I don't have access to.

Thank god for AW message boards to get the Truth out!

That's right, Enchanted. The story will probably change on CNN shortly.

First news reports are always suspect.

The Gov got the information FROM the FBI. They are upset because he went public. THEY want to be the ones who decide what information they want the public to know. Trust me when I tell you that they know a LOT more than they are telling us. Under the guise of "not causing panic"...information is being kept from the general public.

Maybe that's good...maybe not. As the Governor said, if he didn't warn us and something DID happen, he couldn't live with himself. I, for one, am staying off the bridges. Better safe than sorry (or dead).

I've wondered how politicians would handle this type of information. My sister was privy to some information because of her job. It concerned an attack that was planned for a couple weeks ago. Obviously it didn't happen and a warning of the specific type of danger was never made public to the residents of that city. I can understand the desire to keep panic to a minimum but I'd prefer to know that a particular city appeared to be targetted before I made a nonessential trip there.

The government treats us like children. I haven't seen any panic in the streets since yesterday. So some people won't go on the bridge, others have rearranged work schedules so they won't be on the bridge at heavy commute times. More are using public transportation.

Informed and given choices is the way I want it, not vague warnings. I think he was right in giving it to the public.
