In a Sign of Changing Times, Bush Calls for More Spending.

President Bush's new budget will propose a spending increase of 9 percent for next year, more than any big-government Democrat would dare to put on the table.

So much for yet another campaign lie.

Actually, since Eisenhower, every Republican administration has increased the size of government MORE than Democratis adminstrations have. They have also raised taxes more, spent more, gotten us into debt more than Democratic admistrations as well. That Republican voters are so shocked to hear such facts, as if they could never have beenlied to all these years by their own party, goes far in explaining why they still vote Republican.

Hate to tell ya, but Bush is planning to reduce government employees in some bureaus by 5% in 2003, 10% in 2004 and so on. One of Bush's cabinet members has been tasked with developing a plan of reducing gov't employees by 50%. What is not well known is that the gov't employees will be replaced with contractors...the cost of which is quite a bit more than paying for gov't employees and that is including the benefits. Big business likes this because they will be getting the lucrative contracts with the gov't. Recent studies have shown that gov't employees are paid 30-40% below industry norm.

Any Prersident or party that cuts too deeply into the federal payroll list is doomed. Notice how Clinton reduced the size of governement and federal employees were not too willing to vote for Gore after that?

"he gov't employees will be replaced with contractors."

I believe that the origional policy idea was that the government should not compete with the private sector; that is, to not produce anything that competes against existing industry because, as you pointed out, the costs are much less. That not only will it cost us a whole lot more in the longrun, the responsibilities of governement will be out of the public's hands and control will shift to private hands. That's what worries me more.

Well, Clinton tried to reduce but it didn't go too far. What agencies did was play a shell game. They only eliminated positions that had not been filled in years (due to low budgets). The other game agencies played was to 'eliminate' management positions by rewriting the job descriptions as 'Team Leaders'. This made it appear the positions were eliminated (headlines, 'Gov't Reduced Management Positions) when the pay was not reduced, just a job retitlement.

Then add in those that took the early out offers, the gov't figures APPEARED to look like he reduced gov't jobs. But not really. Shell game.

Don't get me wrong: I dislike both reigning political parties for selling out this country to Big Business and other private interests. Other private interests, as in Foreign Countries who control too much of our government because of the debt that we sell to them. That we were getting out fo debt meant that their influence was weakening and that could only be good for America. Of course, typical conservatives and RepubliKlans prefer to sell us out for a profit - that's their Way. Why else would the RepubliKlans ruin our economy, then smash the Surplus that was paying down the debt, eh? RepubliKlans and conservatives alike have sold out this country and betrayed all Americans. Better a "democrap" than being a TRAITOR! Take your 30 pieces of silver prettypics and spend it while you can ...
