Has anyone seen this movie? It has only played at a couple art houses near here. It's the story of an Afghani/Canadian woman who goes back under the burqa to get to Kandahar to see her sister. The movie was directed by an Iranian and filmed in Iran about a mile from the Afghan border. I'd be tempted to call it surreal if by now I didn't know better.
Here's a review from the Washington Post:

saabsister, it just opened in a theatre near me. I've wanted to see it ever since I read a striking essay by the director.

Here.

It's long, but worthwhile.

How did you like Lantana?

Lost a bracket and hate those brs

Snowyegret, I've read about 2/3s of the article. I'll finish it tomorrow. It is informative - a better description of what's happening (prior to 9/11)than anything I've read in the newspaper.

I enjoyed "Lantana". It took many unpredictable turns - unlike so many Hollywood movies. I wonder what our Aussie friends thought of it - if they saw it.

Thanks for the post about the movie saabsister. I very seldom go to movies but this one will be an exception!

Snowegret, That's really a great link!

Helen, I think it's playing in DuPont Circle and at the Fairfax Cinema Arts. In the past ten years ,until a couple months ago, I'd probably seen about ten movies in theatres. Recently, I went to the Fairfax theatre to see "Amelie" and was hooked on the big screen again - so much better than watching videos. While there, I saw the previews for "Lantana" and "Kandahar". So I saw those as well.

Helen, I found that right after Sept 11. I really look forward to seeing if he writes some more, and will hopefully see the movie this week.

Our local art theatre is downtown, but Khandahar is playing right around the corner from me. Lantana is still downtown though.

According to the article, the movie is being shown in DC on Florida Avenue...and nobody goes to Florida Avenue after dark. I'll check out Dupont Circle tomorrow.
