The 'speech to the world' in China was stupendous. Amazing breadth of thought, an example set before the world--of what?

Republican apologists are already trying to pass the speech off as clever- a critique of Chinese humanitarian and geopolitical violations by an unspoken comparison of their ways with our [good] ways, but that's hogwash.

The man, once again, proved himself to be an embarrassment to all Americans.

Anyway, someone seems to have walked him halfway through an eigth grade civics course before he spoke. At least he's learning.

I knew you'd warm to him in time...

Actually, I can't watch him, can't listen to him, so I admire your fortitude. His simpering, often unintelligible "soundbites" rile me to an unsafe level -- I'm ready to hurl heavy objects at the TV after ten seconds of him and I can't afford the luxury of doing so right now. Though Lord knows it would be satisfying.

Gee, plsmith, I thought that *I* was the only one around here who felt that way. What you said describes me to a 'Tee'!

KRS must have a stainless-steel stomach in order to actually listen to what that jackass has to say. Mine always starts churning at the first stupid, arrogant thing that Bush says -- that's usually 10-seconds into any speech.

I've got you both beat, I can't even stand to watch him walk. I wish they wouldn't let him out at all!

Pat and Borillar,

You really should see that speech, if only to watch the students. He was stupid enough to speak of educational achievements by Chinese women and there wasn't a woman student in th room. I'm not sure, but I doubt that women are even allowed to attend the place.

On top of that he gave this silly instruction about the way that American politics and law worked that had me completely dumbstruck. He claimed that 95% of Americans believe in God and that more than half of all Americans volunteer to help those in need. Complimented China on it's great strides in the last few years and gave a peptalk to the students, the inheritors of a culture that is what 400 times as old as ours, saying that they would lead the way [into our way I guess].

I really was close to speechless when I posted here last night, not quite believing what I'd just seen. I'm still at a loss trying to figure out why the trainers allowed him to do that. His wife and Condaleeeeza spent most of the time looking at the floor but I'm sure that I saw Condaleeza look up toward him with an expression that could only have been one of aghast dismay.

It was, hands down, the worst most pitiable display that I've ever witnessed in the political arena.

You know what bothers me most? The fact that our political system is so screwed up that a borderline imbecile like Bush can be foisted upon us as The Leader of the Free World. His insertion into the Presidency sent a coded message around the world to every dictatorship and corrupt regime: Mission Accomplished.

Ken, I've no doubt that your synopsis of his performance is accurate. Again, I laud your willingness to have your jaw dropped repeatedly. Myself, I might have watched his speech if he'd attempted to deliver it in Chinese...

I just couldn't bring myself to watch it. I'd become my grandmother - talking back to the tv.

What I worry most about is how the Republican Corporate Fascists intend on getting their next tyrant into office. They've already discovered how to get a President appointed into office, rather than elected by the people of this nation. I hear an awful lot of noise about how this will all just blow over and be repaired at the next election, but honestly, they are on a roll. Do you really think that they haven't developed enough strategies to cheat the American people again if the mass ballot box stuffings do not work like last time. Will we ever see a return to Constituional Authority again? I doubt it. Look at Bush illegally running a War and everyone knows the complete distain that Republicans have for the sanctity of the U.S. Constitution when they tried to impeach Clinton for getting a mere blow job.

I'm with the group here who cannot bear to watch him talk. I don't honestly know why I have such a visceral reaction to him. He's embarrassing. Also, I'm pretty smart (as I know all of you are too!), and maybe deep down I'm thinking that this stupid man is breaking the rules we were all taught--that if you don't study hard and LEARN stuff, you won't succeed. His speech rhythms are a huge negative for me--five words and pause, five words and pause, always with a downturn in his voice on the fifth word. Maybe it's his perpetual sneer. Maybe it's his lack of an upper lip. Maybe I see his father in his face, or the look his mother had when she called Hillary something that "rhymes with witch." Whatever it is, I too talk back to the TV. I hate that! I always switch channels after about 3 sentences. . . .

Bush forgets that 'unpleasantness' in the '40s
White House alters transcripts to cover for Bush
Transcript: The White House (Jim K.) (Ed H.)
"My trip to Asia begins here in Japan for an important reason. (Applause.) It begins
here because for half a century now, America and Japan have formed one of the great
and enduring alliances of modern times. From that alliance has come an era of peace
in the Pacific. And in that peace, the world has witnessed the broad advance of
prosperity and democracy throughout East Asia. …"
. . . but What did Bush actually say?
Transcript: Department of State
"My trip to Asia begins here in Japan for an important reason. (Applause.) It begins
here because for a century and a half now, America and Japan have formed one of the
great and enduring alliances of modern times. From that alliance has come an era of
peace in the Pacific. And in that peace, the world has witnessed the broad advance of
prosperity and democracy throughout East Asia. …"

Bush is a stupid dumb-ass and the Republican Voters Worship him! Any wonder why I rail at them and taunt them? Have they no shame? I'm trying to find out. So far, they act as if nothing is happening, nothing is happening at all ... everyone remain c-a-l-m ...

The What House transcript of the Sermon to the Diet:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/02/20020218-2.html

and the State Department transcript of the same pontification:

http://usinfo.state.gov/topical/pol/terror/02021803.htm

No doubt the U.S. State Department will be added to the list of terrorist sympathizers now, but if I was Colin Powell I'd have been bombed since the selection.
