From today's Washington Post:
"Key congressional leaders said yesterday the White House did not tell them that President Bush has moved a cadre of senior civilian managers to secret underground sites outside Washington to ensure that the federal government could survive a devastating terrorist attack on the nation's capital.
"Senate Majority Leader Thomas A. Daschle (D-S.D.) said he had not been informed about the role, location or even the existence of the shadow government that the administration began to deploy the morning of the Sept. 11 hijackings. An aide to House Minority Leader Richard A. Gephardt (D-Mo.) said he similarly was unaware of the administration's move.
"Among Congress's GOP leadership, aides to House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (Ill.), second in line to succeed the president if he became incapacitated, and to Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott (Miss.) said they were not sure whether they knew."

It's a bit chilling that Bush is taking steps like this without consultation and in secrecy. Makes you wonder what else he's doing and not telling us about.

Get up on the wrong side of bed, krs? I've been "wondering" about Bush since before he was "elected." He's always been a sneaky little dweeb, but since 9/11 he's getting bolder and bolder about showing his true colors.

This situation is a tempest in a teapot. The "shadow govt" has been in emergency protocol since the cold war. Part of its effectiveness is not telling everyone about it - it used to be part of the black budget.
My main concern is that this protocol has been neglected for many years and it seems that the phone and computer systems are very outdated and probably wouldn't work if needed.
In any event, if you hate Bush and Cheney so much, you should be glad that there are at least career bureaucrats in bunkers to direct and re-build the govt. H*ll, they're probably as legitimate as the administration we have.

Really? Got a list of names, Reamond? Or should I simply consult the membership rolls of the John Birch Society, or maybe the CCC? What grupensturm would make up this unelected government?
Maybe it's just a group of right thinking military, cia, and ex military people who would be most able to stage a takeover under martial law? After all, if the congress doesn't know about them then how would they legitimize themselves to the congress when the situation required it? Oh, wait, I know! They have no need of the congress in a military coup, now do they?

So we can expect DC to be nuked any day now and Bush will conveniently be in Florida talking to school kids? Then the new "government" will crawl out of their hole and Bush can be Dictator!! I can hardly wait.
This whole thing disturbs me greatly. Way too sneaky.

Way too likely is the real problem. That the politicians of both parties have long since sneered at the US Constitution and legalized Bribery and passed legislation that made themselves Above The Law, and now they cozy up to corporations who have the worst humanitarian records, it won't be long before they decide that it'll be easer to retain power by sacrificing a whole city, rather than face voters next election. Then, Bush will be made President For Life and go down to Cuba and smoke cigars with Castro.

Come on we all know Bush would never be declared president for life, he has a brother and other male relatives who each expect there fair turn at runining the country after the hangign chads are all counted. and this secret center can easily be located cause if it's going to be a Bush hangout the local liquer store and taco bell will have to make deliveries
