I gave up bedroom sets back in 1987, when I admitted I was addicted to 400-threadcount Egyptian linens and that my life had become unmanageable. They were costing me hundreds of dollars a year.
Without sheets, the mattress became useless and out of place, so I got rid of it. I figure I've saved at least $1,000 not buying a new one.
The bedframe itself -- while a handsome roccoco affaire -- looked utterly ridiculous without a mattress and soon its only purpose was to afford me an occasional toe-stubbing on one of its carved legs. Getting rid of it was the best space-making move I've ever enacted. Without a costly bedset constantly demanding that its existence be justified by my using it nightly, I was able to give up the nagging habit of sleeping.
And with all the money I've saved, I went out and bought 4,000 cartons of Marlboro 100's. They fit neatly into the area once occupied by that worthless bed set...
