That is do you recognize the secular authority?
They seem to be stuck in the middle ages blaming 6 year olds for their own abuse.
I am not sure they are ready or willing to accept the rule of law over them. They seem to mentally be stuck back when the Papal States were a secular power with their own armies.
That is the first question they should ask in court.

You seem to be "stuck" on this issue, gravid. I wonder why.

Anger , disgust , lack of a life of my own , abusive relatives who fortunatly did not get to me, but I still saw the damage they did first hand.

"You seem to be "stuck" on this issue"

Or maybe because it's one of the times when the overall hypocrisy and dementia of the catholic church and thus all catholics are exposed to the world, and the opportunity that results should not be let go, katd.

are you stuck on the time honored attempt by catholics everywhere to cover up and deny these issues?

I guess what drove me over the edge was when Law was saying that the family and the six year old that was abused did not take proper precautions and had to share the blame. It was once common in rape and abuse cases to blame the victem, but the secular powers have grown past that. Of course we know change is frowned upon in the Church. But they must be making some progress since they have not accused him of heresy or witchcraft and burned him at the stake to shut him up.

It really would not surprise me if at trial the "Princes" of the church say they are subject to no temperal powers. They went right away to their leader the Vicor of Christ - The Pontifex Maximus whoes word seals law in both heaven and earth rather than any civil authority. Maybe they should have listened better that even he thought it an crime. But who are we to question them?

I like what Bob Scheiffer(sp?) stated over the weekend....

Priests who commit child abuse should be dismissed
Priests who try to cover up incidents of child abuse should be dismissed
Priests who know about the commision of child abuse and do nothing about it should be dismissed.

Simple and straight to the point. Not some long involved statements that mean and do nothing. Of course, if they were to implement these rules now even the Pope and all the Cardinals would have to be dismissed. But I firmly believe that God himself would be overjoyed.....

Its a crime, and if they did it, they should be punished accordingly under the laws in this country. And of course should be dismissed, they'd be in jail, or should be.

The Pope released a statement (though I'm sure its his advisors that did it, he's pretty out of it these days) that these are criminal acts and should be treated as such.

OT. I don't think allowing Priest to marry is going to solve anything. Pedophilla is a crime, plain and simple. I'm Catholic and am not denying any of this happened.

I think it's a good topic gravid. I would think if I was ever abused by a priest when I was young, it would make me feel like God himself betrayed me. This has to be THE worst sin imaginable. Just because they are "sexually immature", these criminals need to be put behind bars and do some long-term repenting.

Reminds me of one at work I had to deal with today. "I wish you would just take your medication", I said. She said, "Oh, You are projecting!" "Yeah, I'm projecting", I mumbled back from the xerox machine. She felt so clever and insightful so repeated herself, "You're projecting!" I thought to myself, "and Mary is retiring tomorrow, GD,GD, GD..."

But I digress...

I wonder how many of those priests were young pretty altar boys themselves once upon a time? And that's all I have to say on this topic. It's not high on my interest list.

Why this rabbit was pulled out of a hat when the real big news story was the war crimes by the Israelis, and is the church going to sit back and stay the whipping boy for the government or get some guts and ask for UN Troops in the mideast and war crimes trials for sharon and accomplices

You've got a good point auroranorth. This catholic sex thing has been going on for years. All of a sudden when we should be focused on Sharon, the Jewish war criminal we are after the Catholic priests. What a switcheroo.
