It may be a big inconvenience to internet sellers for Mastercard to do this but do you really think they want to turn away the business? The truth is that the credit card companies have been getting caught in the middle of 1000's of disputes with third parties such as Paypal which may be one of the worst problems. For example, Paypal has a 30 day dispute policy. As it often takes more than that time to get(or not get) and examine a purchase, it is convenient for Paypal to wash their hands of the problem. This puts the credit card companies in a position of having to deal with both Paypal and the seller to try to resolve the dispute on the buyer's behalf. Aside from any other financial concerns, I am not surprised that with these time($) consuming liabilities that it has come to this.
