this summer, you might want to think about driving instead. Forget new airport security measures. They can't stop Stinger missiles.

They're saying the al qaeda has these missles that are missing and they could have been smuggled into the U.S. (amazing), and if they have been smuggled into the U.S., they are not necessarily targeted at the U.S....LMAO!!

Bottom line....

They can't really stop these sorts of attacks.

They could perhaps destroy the entire middle east and the terrorists would still exist outside their home area.

As a little guy without big money or need to travel I can stay safe. However.....

If I were Bush I would be VERY worried that it has always been possible to assasinate a US President - The rub has always been you can't get away most of the time.

These guys don't CARE.

Well, at least Mexico found that cynanide, they say.

I'm still suspicious about that plane that "disintegrated" after take-off from NY a few years back... People reported seeing what looked like missile fire. Hallucinigens I guess.

Yes, I saw this online this morning. Maybe that's one reason why the government is asking people to report anything they see that looks un-usual....you know...snitching

agreed gravid...there's no way we can be protected from so many things.

For me...our eldest son and his wife are expecting in August...and I'm going to be flying across country to HI. If it's my time to go....it will happen...but I've chosen not to let these terrorists rule my life until that day comes.

Hi LindaK! Where have you been? Haven't seen you around in ages. Congrats on the new grandbaby!

As far as keeping an eye out, I wouldn't know what one of these things look like. I imagine most people wouldn't.

Hi Katyd - Yes, took a break for a while...between the requirement for cc #s and my health [at that time...much better now] I just stopped.

Thanks for the congratulations....it's been 13 years between granddaughters...so we're thrilled...to say the least. We're just keeping our fingers crossed that her dad [our son] will be around for her birth.

If you see someone parked where they have a good view of an approuch to the runways and they don't seem to be doing any normal necking - picknicking-fishing etc - that is a worry in itself.

The missles are usually shipped in a long narrow case that is about 4 foot x 2 foot x 1 foot It could be green tan black or repainted anything real easy. The weapon is basically a tube with fairly large "sights" and handles. It is not something easy to fire quickly or from cover. You need to activate it and do a diagnostic that says it is OK and the seeker in the missle has to chill down. Then it is only able to stay in that prep mode for so long. When the missle is aimed it has to aquire the imaige of the target thermally in the missle itself. There is no guidence from the launch tube assembly. The range at which it can aquire and track and reach the plane is limited. You can't stand at the end of the runway and shot at a plane flashing by a couple hundred feet overhead. You also will run out of fuel and miss if the plane is too high or far away even though you can see it easy. Most airliners fly at about 30,000 feet so they have to shoot near the take off or landing as most don't reach well past 16,000 feet and about 3 to 4 miles out.
Ideal would be to shot at a plane over water where there can be no false heat sources and a mile to two miles out at 2,000 to 6,000 feet. A side to rear quarter shot is better as it will aquire and as it closes turn into a following shot right up the hot exhaust pipe. A head on shot is too difficult for most of these shoulder fired weapons to track as the thermal imaige is poor from the front and it can lose track as it turns.

A lot of these weapons have been handled rough and stored in horrible conditions in caves and buried to hide them and don't work at all when you try to use them so a smart terrorist might have a crew of two or three all set to shoot.

If you ever see a crew ready to launch and can't stop them the best thing you might try if you have an accurate weapon is to put a round right through the middle of the tube when he shoulders it. It may still launch but when the burn gets to the part with a hole poked through it you will know. If he fires there is about one full second after he fires where the launching charge has blown the missle out of the tube. A lot of people think it was a dud when they see it floating out like in slow - mo and you can still shoot it like a clay pigeon - but about ten foot out the rocket ignites and then you will never track it fast enough to hit it.

I think most people would recognize these things if mini rockets with a payload attached started showing up in there neighborhood.

I mean just listen and watch outside at what little Johnny is showing off to his friend if its biger then a bread box and not a new skate board or roller blades probably is not a happy nieborhood play thing.

List to the news if this type of thing is in this country it will show up in schools either in talk or in the news when joe strange launches one down the hall or something or uses it for a fire work on the 4th of july.

these things are easy to spot if you realize that terrorist are working with the young to get there dirty work done ages 9 to 30 mainly they are bulding a network that is a fighting force it wont look much different then any other military only the joining age is younger and your uniform is hatered .

Its a scary fact but the truth and if your not watching and learning now to see the problems in less then 20 year you will have terrorist running part of your state local and fedral government if they are not there to some degree already.

this terrorist movement is so wild and been left fairly untouched for so long it could make the cold war fears we lived through look like a tip toe through the tulip bed.

lindak, Im in the same mind frame as you are. If its time for me to go, then its time, regardless of wherever I choose to go on any given day. But thinking logically, I dont think planes heading to the hawaiian islands will be targeted. Even thought they are fueled for a long distance and considered a huge bomb, the planes going down wont take out anything as it comes down except causing a humungous waves. I think terrorists want the most damage possible, so if they do target, they will be doing so to those going cross country, so when they come down, they take out a town or two.
Im going to hawaii hopefully in September..maybe october for my birthday (to kcat's). Im not worried about "going down". Im worried about being on the island and something happens where I cant get home.

Hep..You're near the coast...I'm 1900 miles from CA now....then on to HI.

"[i]Im worried about being on the island and something happens where I cant get home[i]"......where better to be 'stranded' than HI.

That would be the WORST place to be stranded, lindak. THey get most of their supplies from the mainland. And not being able to get home where my pets are...and the apartments that I take care of for a fabulous owner...being stuck on the island is not my idea of paradise unless my pets are with me and I own land where I can grow my own food, lol.

I would not count on people recognizing anything. One of the guys who recently got a BOMB in his mail box went across the street to his neighbor with the capped pipe trailing wires and batteries and asked him what it was. He was invited outside.

However if you do see a bunch of teens or twenty-somethings in a Totota pick-up wearing head towels and flying strange banners off the driving light bar I would not assume that tube pointing at the sky is a telescope they are taking out for an astronomy session.

Gravid: LOL!

You also got me thinking about how to approach back-seat lovers just to make sure something legitimate is being done with that car!

There's an article in today's Washington Post about how private charter planes are bypassing security checks. These planes run the gamut from two-seater prop jobs to 737s. Most of us may not be travelling on them but they fly over our homes and cities.
