Someone approached a Fort Lauderdale dive shop asking to purchase 40 state-of-the-art scuba tanks for cash. A national alert has been issued to ward off possible terrorist efforts at taking out bridges, dams and power plants near to water.

Well, alrighty then. I never thought of that (to use scuba gear to terrorize via the water).

btw...where are you getting all these stories, stusi?

If you were a terrorist wouldn't you have the brains to break up your purchases into smaller lots so as not to attract attention?

But then I would smile and pay attention in flight class to all the take off and landing instruction also...

As pathetic as the CIA and the FBI seem the terrorists seem to be even less sneaky.

Sometimes I think it is a good thing for them I am not a terrorist because making your activity blend in seems obvious to me.

Hepburn101- Many of these stories originate here in South Florida then go national.

Give me a break this one is so old it's pitiful. and while I am at it it shows tunnel vision on Stusi's part. Now I will prove it to her.

This can also be used where water is not the issue. Like in Sewers. or in industrial situations where there are fumes.

In these situations the real danger is not from terrorists but from poorly regulated greedy corporate pussbags who would poison a school district for a few bucks. I wonder how many of the residents in Milwaukee from 48 to 7000 north and between 60th and 76th st knew OMC dumped tons of TCE into their air for years with the governments Blessing. No concern at all for the people living there though.

gravid, terrorists are not that well funded, no matter what the Bush Adminisration of Terrorists announces. Remember the first WTC bombing and how they caught that guy because he returned to pick up the $50 deposit on the U-Haul? A well-financed terrorist would have let the $50 go. Thgis guy was probably trying to buy in quantity for a discount.

auroranorth- Do your homework before making accusations. This story was reported for the first time yesterday on Florida T.V. ! Who has tunnelvision now?

We got this story last week. They interviewed several local scuba related business owners for the evening news.

Personally, when I saw the title of this thread, I thought it was another thread about the recent Shark Attack in Florida. Seems that CNN has nohting else of importance to report on. In fact, CNN is more like Hard Copy and the National Enquirer than real news.

Thanks - Borillar - I had no idea - with all the millions they are supposed to have they could be that cheap. That makes a reasonable excuse for them - now what about the CIA and FBI?

Shark attacks scare me more. I was down in Daytona last summer and the local paper had a front page arial shot where sharks were clearly mingled with swimmers and divers.

I'm like, my kid ain't going in the ocean!

actually the tactic was published heavily in castro's version of radio free America back in the late 60's but like any reactionary you have a limited attention span.

I never did hear about any major rioting in Cincinatti? What was that all about?

Tonight on CNN they had a report about terrorists targeting Puget Sound. What do you suppose they would be after? We have a huge bridge there, the Port of Seattle, ferry's, Bremerton naval shipyards [submarines too],cruise line ships, tourist traps, it's all there. A bit further north the Everett naval station. Which would they chose? They all look like good targets to me.

Funny, we aren't on heightened alert yet.

Remember when they rolled out that fancy stop-light, raw? I busted a gut laughing at how stupid a prop it was. Someone's been spending too much time with their Ducky in the bathtub.

the new policy when there is a race roit is simply to not cover it beyond the local area. the police actually pulled out leaving large areas of the city to rioters.

Auroranorth,I never heard one word about that on any news. Race riots? Do you know what started it?

Borilar, Yes the colorful stoplight is really useful. NOT.Another waste of tax dollars.

Aurora: Yeah me too. What's going on in Cinncinnati? (Considering what is and/or isn't being published locally and nationally it wouldn't surrprise me one bit.) You said "major", right?

Gravid (Because you are probably going to be the first person to answer this): What can be pulled off from underwater, assuming these guys don't have a sub.

The terrorists have to be home grown, foreign born ones might get mugged on their way to their stunts.

there was an article in a tabliod how one of the sub food chains was taking babies and after 60 years of feeding them their food turning them into geriatircs.

so if a terrorist goes to walmart will some one slap a smile button on them ?

nycyn - The only advantage I can see is access. There are a lot of facilities such as docks and industrial plants bordering on the water that are watched real close on the land side but the water side is pretty hard to watch. How many security companies have sonar?
I would suspect that something like a naval base would have some thought given to such problems - but when you hear of the lack of imaigination after some of their fiascos I don't know.
There are however quite a few limitations. You do have to go into the water somewhere and it is difficult to travel long distances and deliver large amounts of anything like explosives. I say that because you may sink a ship easy with a small charge but something like a bridge is really hard to bring down. It really does require some skill and training. I can see a cruise ship as a target or something like a LPG or oil tanker.
Any ideas like swimming up the sewers to the white house is fantasy.

gravid, the Port of Portland being #1 on the Toxic Waste Cleanup Superfund since 1976, any terrorist swimming in THESE waters would be suicidal indeed!

>Any ideas like swimming up the sewers to the white house is fantasy.

Absolutely! There isn't a motorized apparatus yet made that it is powerful enough so that it can go up the headwaters of the White House sewers!
