I'd say that a great majority of my pet peeves over this whole situation would vanish overnight if Congress would get off of their dead political asses and declare that we are either At War or Not At War. Since ONLY Congress has the Constitutional Authority - not Bush, to Declare War of ANY sort or of ANY kind whatsoever, doesn't it seem that the whole country would be brought together much more closely if Congress did its duty in this area? As long as Bush runs a War that he personally declared against any and all unspecified targets "for as long as it takes", this country of ours is going to remain divided.

So who's fault is it? Is it the Democrats in Congress stonewalling the process in order to raise anger against the Republicans and Bush? Or, are the Republicans in Congress distancing themselves from Bush for some reason? Please, please don't repeat that cockamamie bullsh*t that since this War is unlike any other War we've ever had, I'll repeat that EVERY War that we've ever fought has never been like the previous one!

So, if Congress were to come out and OFFICIALLY DECLARE A STATE OF WAR, would that satisfy you? Or, if satisfied already, would that make a difference to you? It would to me! It would make a GIANT difference!

Maybe some of you "on the inside" can pass along this 'hint'.

I agree Borillar. It's getting pretty lame.

My head is in the sand around this at the moment.

It would be much more honest. I'm not holding my breath.
It would call for personal responsibility and people would want a "win" almost impossible to supply. A war has a way of obligating you. If there are new attacks the public EXPECTS a response in a state of war. Right now they can pretty much prosecute the war or not and there is no real expectation. I am sure Bush would hate to be backed into a corner and have to respond say to a atomic bombing of an American city. If we are in a declared state of war the public will assume it is our enemy with which we are at war. Is congress going to declare for each of the axis of evil and Cuba also? Looks unlikely. How in the world will they leave Saudi Arabia out since they are the people paying for so much of this? Wouldn't that be a mess?

Yes I would feel better about it if Congress did declare war. Because it would solidify and unite us all in a common goal against an enemy that is hell bent on destroying us. Rather than living with all of this division and fighting amongst ourselves.

Otherwise, with the state of the current situation being that we have to hit back after the 911 attack, I think Bush did the correct thing in attacking the Taliban and Alquieda, Congress or no Congress.

Andy jackson did not have a declaration of war when he sent the fleet to deal with the bashaw of algiers.

I dont care for bush, But come on if Vietnam wasn't a war and Korea wasnt a war then this is not a war.

I know that the scoundrals managed to hit a target that shook up wall street and all the big fish,

but other than their hype over it. and overreaction the rest of the country went on living day to day.

to compare the crimminal conduct of people living in caves to the titanic struggle of World war two makes me think that Bush needs to put down the tequila.

maybe Jimmy carter could go see him get him a refreshing glass of coca cola and a few all man brothers records.

get him a visit with Bert lance or someone he could relate to without having to run to poppa all the time.

auroranorth, that would be defined as a "police action" these days. And Presidents have done similar things before without the Constitutional Authority. It has to stop.
We are sliding down a very slippery slope these days with the Bush Presidency and every day, Bush tries to overexert his authority and to break whatever rules he can. And Congress is not doing a damned thing to stop him either. Is it so much to ask that Congress do their job? We are a country divided because Congress refuses to act. I think its because they WANT to have the President gain too much power and upset the Balance put forth in our Constittuion! I don't care if you are for Bush or against Bush, people have to stop being so stupid to not see where this is all leading us. And we can stop it dead in its tracks by having Congress declare one way or another. The question is, how do we get them to do it?

The usual method has been to dump the majority of them back on the street.

But the new ones need to know WHY.

No one can declare war without an enemy and an enemy is a tangible thing - a state in about every case. War may be declared as a result or reaction to the action(s) of a state but not against the actions by themselves.

KRS, that was the "sticky point". The excuse that since we were not declaring War against any one country or state, Congress cannot declare War. Baloney!

I say, let Bush pick out the enemy strongholds, let Congress declare War on them!

Bush can say which country needs to be wiped out for supporting Al-Queda/Taliban/Terrorists and Congress can go give him the Constitutional Authority which is THEIR JOB!

Why is that so hard to swallow?

But that might really result in them having to pass on something they are visably obligated to do.

They are determained not to SEE any Saudi connection no matter how deep they catch them with their hands down the cookie jar.

Too true, gravid. I wish we'd go and topple the Saudis. My muslim friends are all in favor of this, BTW. They hate the Saudis because they pretend to be Holier Than Thou and at the same time impoverish the nation and enrich themselves ~ very unIslamic-like.
