The Prez has proposed moving around several top agencies under the Department of Homeland Security. The CIA and the FBI would apparently be left autonomous. The same people would be in place but the software to coordinate the effort is missing from the big jigsaw puzzle. Much ado about nothing?

Weeeelll...same problem exists though, since the same people will be having access to the software that shares the info, right? Something is wrong with this picture, yes?

Hepburn- today the FBI director was saying that they did not have the necessary software to coordinate their own internal efforts. In this day and age, to think a lack of software could put us at great risk is inexcusable. Maybe Bill Gates should be running the anti-terrorist effort!

Bill gates wpould Probably look at it as a business problem and do what is cost effective of all the options including straight out buying them off or wiping them out.

First the Prez turns "green" on the environment and now he is for bigger government. He has become a Democrat!

stusi, that is what traditionally happens with a Republican President or Majority Congress. Government ALWAYS grows bigger under the Republicans. Then, come election time, they turn around and lie to their voters that it's the DEMOCRATS who are for bigger government and it is the Republicans who are for Smaller government. This lie has been going on for as long as I've been alive and people swallow it everytime.

Borillar- you hit the nail on the head! What do you think of this particular move politics aside?

I think that it takes one, giant leap towards a total police state. The current problem isn't that police and investigators are bumbling fools - that's the exception, not the rule. When left alone without public or political pressure to hurry up an investigation, the policing agencies are amazingly effictive from a human standpoint. What has kept the police and other agencies at bay from running over us is not the constitution. The Constituion is only a 'hinderance' to many of them. What is the real hinderance to them and the most protection for us and our rights to be left alone an not harrassed is that each agency does not co-operate with each other to a large extent. And if you think that this was done this way as an inadvertant mistake, guess again. The system of policing in this country of ours is much like the checks and balances imposed upon our government. The very same checks and balances that keep us safe from our government also creates the waste and inefficiency. That applies to our police. You ask what do I think about this? I ask you to imagine what it would be like if the three branches of our government were merged all into one - what would that be like? That is how it will be once they have done this to the policing agencies.

Borillar- Just to play devil's advocate----To what degree should all breaches of security eg.- terrorists entering the country, attacks on our cities or embassies, citizens taken hostage on foreign soil, etc.- be available to all agencies?

You're asking me for solutions to problems that even the best minds in this country cannot agree upon. I'll admit to being well-informed and educated and possessing a good intellect, but I'm not about to second-guess what steps ought to be taken when I do not have the complete picture of the problem.

Several recent observations-
1. It has been suggested rather than wait two years for a proposed computer data- base overhaul, that a company like Google be approached to provide an almost immediate update.
2. I wonder whether those who are concerned about any increase in budgets have thought about the possible cost to the nation, specifically its stock markets, if another WTC or nuclear attack occurs.
3. Many conservatives are adverse to this move and the Dems seem to be unsure how to react to bigger government but bigger brother.

"Many conservatives are adverse to this move ..."

It isn't that Conservatives are wrong, just because they are conservative. Rather, their problem is that they've placed their trust in the wrong political party and the wrong Presidential candidate. The GOP has called to them and lured them in as well, and once again, the Republican party shows itself NOT to be for Amrica or Americans and are back to dismanteling the U.S. Constitution, just like they do every chance they get. That is NOT what Conservatives are for, but they are stubborn and *HATE* to admit when they have been wrong. Unfortunately, the GOP does know how to sing their siren call to these stout folks and many conservatives will stay with the anti-American, anti-Democracy Republican Party.
