I know you do bench rest shooting. I don't have much social contact due to not hearing. Have you been aware of anyone experimenting with aerodynamically stabilized projectiles instead of rifling? I am interested in doing that with a smooth bore gun. The only thing I find in net search are for tank canon. They do get sub minute accuracy with those. If you don't want to post you can mail to [email protected]. I only check it daily.

I've heard of the tank cannon, and I've seen the question come up about whether there would be a benchrest applicability. The general response was negative but I don't recall what reasons were given. Off the top I'd guess that there would be a particular distance from the muzzle needed to achieve stabilization and the benchrest events, limited to 100 and 200 yds. might not allow for it. Also, MOI accuracy, though impressive in a tank gun, isn't anywhere close to competitive in benchrest. You need reliable consistant 1/4 minute to even show up. A lot of events are being won now with aggregate groupings of less than .2", many as low as .016". It's amazing.

Thanks - that is pretty amazing. I realize it would not be as accurate. It would sort of be starting again at the bottom of a learning curve. I may do it just for fun. I have some ideas about stabilization including a couple ways a round that a projectile could spin itself without rifling.

I think eventually you will see rounds about shot gun slug size with a mineature video cameras that take an imaige off the sighting system when fired and guide themselves to the impact point with fins or air brakes.

I think that the army is already working on something along that line but instead of metal projeciles they are rolling people the size of stusi up and having them use fingers and toes for for guidance. It's from an idea originated in Australia I think.

Adds a whole new dimension to the problem of friendly fire.

Before you see the shotgun slug with the video camera, the development will tend towards the laser sensor. The laser beam comes out of the sights and the round is guided to the beam's endpoint. That technology is available at present. Just to expensive for widespread use.

The new ultr-capacitors on the market will also make practical for the first time laser or rail guns.

A capacitor about the size of a paperback book will deliver 1000 amps at 2.4 volts for about 2 seconds. And it costs about $5.

They will also reduce the amount of batteries a hybrid car has to carry by about 2/3rds.
