Listening to the news while working on my computer. They just finished a segment on the Ford company that has me gritting my teeth. They are moving into the Russian market with their Focus model. They opened a plant there that is staffed 95% by Russian workers (the rest seem to be US advisors/managers). It uses all-Russian components in the cars it builds. The report lauds Ford and its support of the Russians' needs and economy...

The Russians they can do this for. It would really be nice if they thought of supporting *our* needs and economy. Open factories here that employ our people. Use all-US components...

Probably part of the economic incentives in exchange for Russia's support with the War on Terror and to compensate for their cutting back arms sales to Iran. May be only the beginning.

I doubt that it is pure benevolence on the part of Ford. They probably escape import duties (and impact of unpredictible exchange rates on profits) by producing the cars in the countries where the cars are sold.

The Japanese set up automotive factories in Canada for the similar reasons.

"The Japanese set up automotive factories in Canada for the similar reasons"

Duh. No news there. They've had factories in this country for nearly twenty years and it's primarily to avoid import restrictions that used to keep them from flooding the market with their products.

The only U.S. built cars available here are those with asian names. Toyotas are Californian or Kentuckian, Hondas from Ohio, and Subaru from Indiana. Chevrolets are canadian cars, fords are mexican, or each is some of both.

Even the bastion of inviolate Americana, Harley Davidson, uses mikuni carburation, showa suspension, and nippondenso electrical systems.

Buy Amuricun! The job you save may be Horoshida Murita's.

I really have no problem with free trade if iut were truely free. But it very rarely is - the companies are subsidized in so many ways or controlled by permits and restrictions. That is why the candy industry is moving to Canada - because the price of sugar here is kept artificially high.

I totally agree. [While I admit I understand little about how all this benefits our economy.]

I can remember, as a very young girl, when my mother refused to purchase anything that wasn't made in the USA. At that time imports were mostly coming from Japan. It appears to have been a downward slide since then. Much cheaper to buy imported items as wages are much cheaper almost anywhere else in the world.

And profe51 you're right. If only we could afford US products.

We were quickly aware, while vacationing and moving to northcentral AR., that one sees very few foreign cars on the roads. Much different than in CA.

And in those days anyone with a little mechanical ability could repair their own cars...not have to pay a dealership outrageous charges. Look at all the 'move around' space under that hood.

Yeah, there is A LOT of room in there... in the 'specs' what specs they did give, was it was all original everything, with 93,000 actual miles

They have the 'classic show cars' but they've all had newer parts put in them, there is a 67 Camaro in there that is all original though

Yeah, I remember my brother and all his friends all worked on their own cars. Today though, you still can, but the young guys, you don't see them under the hood much at all.
