I'm watching a PBS special about Iraq and terrorists and the Kurds. Very gruesome. I had no idea Saddam had killed so many Kurds. Three times he gassed them and killed many, many thousands.[I knew about 5,000 but there are many more dead and injured than that]Also has training camps for AlQaeda and others. 100,000 people..men,women and children have disappeared..probably taken to be used for testing chemicals. He really does look like a "Hitler" maybe even worse.
The more I watch the madder I get and wonder where is the international communities outrage? Why is it always us? What good is the UN?

Right. Why us? He could be as dangerous as hitler was yet the countries which are most at risk accept him. Not only that but it seems that they'd resent our intrusion. If we went ahead despite that and removed him what's to replace him?

I think the countries around Iraq "accept" Sadam only because to do otherwise might invite his wrath.

Underneath the objections of neighboring countries to our toppling Sadam is a strong covert current in favor of his demise.

However, The Kurds and the Shiites in the South, as well as the Iranians and Saudis will not get involved even with the rhetoric until the US actually commits to getting the job done.

None of them want to take a public stand against Sadam unless we have the forces in place to clean house. He can hit Saudi Arabia and Iran with Scuds, and the war with Iran cost 1 million lives. These folks have no real guarantee that the US would lift a finger if he starting gassing them too.

I can't blame them. We withdrew from Iraq the last time and Sadam slaughtered the Shiites in the South.

Saddam is busy building the worst kinds of WOMD. If we just sit here waiting for someone to do something, the results will be terrible, not just for the Middle East, but for us as well.

It's kind of surprising that Bush is talking about covert action, even assasination, to remove Saddam. Pre 9/11, that kind of talk was unheard of. Now, nobody even blinks. Given a choice between taking Saddam out, or reducing Iraq to rubble, I think most people would prefer the former.

The thing is, Saddam knows where we stand. He refuses to stop creating horrible weapons. He has violated the terms of the Gulf War agreement. Right now, he has the opportunity to save his bacon. He can stop this at any time.

If we do go into Iraq, we can't make the same mistake we did last time. We can't leave Saddam or Iraq in a position to continue its nuclear/biological weapons program. Roughing up Saddam and then leaving the U.N. to do the clean up work isn't an option.

No, it just means that he's finally listening...

I don't think we can police the whole region without European support.

The U.S. has been trying to assassinate Saddam for a long time now but haven't succeeded. Without a lot of American lives being at risk, what kind of new weapon or whatever do they have now they didn't have before? Why are they sounding so confident this time?

KD, if it is a Nuke and if they use it, Bagdad will be vaporized in retaliation, along with Sadaam's Palaces.

Like I've said for a very long time: punishing Iraq for having Sadaam is not going to resolve anything nor make anyone happy. Instead, if you want to pizz off Sadaam, blow up his Palaces, nearly 100 in all (he likes to collect Palaces the way that Imelda Marcos loves to collect shoes). *THAT* would hit him where it hurts! Forget about invading - just wipe out his palaces, give forewarning that a palace will be destroyed, but not name which one, and let the people get away (the Palaces aren't going anywhere). Then, we choose one Palace a day until their all gone; or, until he steps down from power completely. What an incentive!

I agree. The Iraqi people have lived with enough hatred. They can't leave, so they'd be doomed either way.

I didn't realize he had so many palaces! That's a real good suggestion Borillar!

Through my rose colored glasses, I see some sniper in a croud, blowing his head off, then there's this big silence but everyone ends up cheering, like the Witch's death scene in the Wizard of Oz.

I have a very strong hatred for this so called human, but in reality it is sad for us all. My daughter's friend leaves sunday for Iraq, he just came home from Afganistain (sp? sorry) His job title at 20 is "sniper" I really hope we get him, but this is our kids, family friends going over and war is never a good thing. Iraq's neighbor's won't fight but our kids will?? something really wrong here, I understand if the other country's take a stand they can get blown up faster then us but hey they better join in.

I don't like talking politics so I will let you all fight it out, just remember the ones the Kids fighting for our Freedom now and in our past.

AMERICA!!!

I think I saw that special rawbunzel. There were others just as bad...Baby Doc, Idi Amin, etc. All dictators end up with lots of money and love to kill & torture people. The only nation that seems to care is the U.S. I guess it's because the U.S. arsenal is so massive.

I'm just afraid that if anything nuclear is used by anybody, it'll be the beginning of the end. Those countries don't have the same values we have so they feel they have nothing to loose. I think their big goal is what rewards they'll get in the afterlife.

Now honestly auroranorth I think if you really wish to be an ex-pat you can go any number of places in the world and they will welcome you. Any number of people live in quite some comfort just on their social security check in Mexico Greece and other lands. I doubt they will refuse to allow you to leave.

I would hate to see a revolution Bolliar.

It is not like colonial days - you can't destroy the infrastructure and go back to the family farm to live. People depend on the power grid - pubic water and so forth to live. No matter how much you think the current rulers are bad what will replace them? I am not sure I want to live under a coilition of radical vegans and the Michigan militia.
The gov. has all the big guns and a war will be a big big mess. Maybe when it was over Canada will come down and take over to restore control - Ah?
