Gee, Watergate started with only a run of the mill break-in. Today we see so many smoking guns its still too hazy to determine which should receive recognition as the catalyst. Or whether historical comparisons will be closer to Richard Nixon or Warren Harding. Maybe both.

Add an oil derrick to the right of Checkers and we have the picture of a poignant slice of Americana.

It's hard to believe, but I'm actually nostalgic for Nixon. He had a malignant intelligence that these smarmy types now just can't hope to acheive. Plus, he was nuts, and they just wannabe bananas.

Can't remember who told me - but now when your stockbroker and board of directors are done with you your 401K is a 201K.

Yes, I can see that, snowy. I often have the impression today that I'm watching caricactures, but I think Ashcroft at least would meet most anyone's criteria for nuts.
Gravid, yes, I've seen that, maybe here. I hope that we're not going to be getting into comparisons with Herbert Hoover. Looks pretty bleak though.

The NYT business section has an interesting article focused on Halliburton's good fortune in profiting from the war on terrorism.
"The Halliburton Company, the Dallas oil services company bedeviled lately by an array of accounting and business issues, is benefiting very directly from the United States efforts to combat terrorism."
"Zelma Branch, a KBR spokeswoman, said the company relied on its excellent record rather than personal relationships to win its contracts. But hiring former military officers can help the company understand and anticipate the Pentagon's needs."

And like wise I am sure doing business with the Pentagon lets them anticipate the military officers future needs!

well Nixon was a lot funnier than these Guys imagine him stranding there arms outstretched wiggling his jowls saying your president is not a crook! compare this to one of the many BUSH. Imagine one of them standing up wheelding out thousand point of light! just not as funny.
Anyhow I figured it out, those thousand points of light were alarm systems kicking in at our savings and loans.

LOL! I'm just going to have to stay long enough to read a thread now and then.
