hi !
have a question for you clothing experts.
I never dyed anything in my life
but recenly I looked into my closet and I realized I have about 6-8 items that I would really like to be dyed Black.

I dont even know where to buy the dye or how to work it, can some one give me some pointers?

it's 2 pairs of pants (beige, and sand color) two sheer robes (ivory satin and red polyester)
one ivory sheer neglige and about 3 tops (one of them is sweater, light colors)
other then the satin neglige and robe everything else is washable.

I've heard stories about doing in a pot
in hot watter, I probably would like to avoid that, with my luck I'll get the whole kitchen black.

thank you
regards
Laiki

i dont know if I can post my email here if you wanna contact me dirrect,
my user ID on eBay is the same as my posting ID here

Here's some info from Rit. If you have success, let me know. I've thought of dyeing some of my faded black clothes.

Check out dharmatrading.com. I dye natural fibers, and have had very good results with their Procion #44 Better Black. They have a cheap industrial black dye too.

I mix up 2 tsp dye powder and 8 oz warm not hot water in a squirt bottle. For what you want to do, I would mix 32 oz (8 tsp dye) in a container that could hold the clothes one at a time. Dip them in the dye, make sure all is covered, put in a plastic bag for 2-24 hours. The clothes need to remain damp for the procion dye. Then rinse like crazy, and launder.

Deka dyes used to come from Europe, you might check in some stores there. Follow their directions.

Be very careful - I tried to dye some clothes a few years back and they only went as far as a dark gray and looked real bad. Do a test item before you do a bunch and ruin some of your favorites. Good luck

Did a few items twice. The first time the color faded in a few washes.

The second time I used the color stripper first and the color lasted better but the fabric was noticably softer from the stripper. Both times it was 100% cotton. Never tried poly.

thanks guys,
i'll check out the websites,

snowyegret:
i dont understand that plastic bag part,
I should soak the clothes in the pot and then move them into a bag and keep them there?

i like the idea of doing it twice,
there is no such thing as "too black" so it should be safe

first I'll have to see how it will work though,
I dont want grey pants either
and funny colors,

the good part is I dont wear the clothes because they are NOT black,
hoping to wear them once the I dye them,
I wear 99 % black only.
(not goth or anything, just my favorite color for past 4 years

have a great weekend

Well, keep them comfortable and free of mold and mildew. When your clothes finally expire and pass to the great beyond put them in the trash, though some people like to cremated theirs first.....

Laiochka, with the Procion dye, you saturate the clothes and keep them damp after for 2- 24 hours. Putting them in a plastic bag keeps them damp and keeps dye from getting all over everything.

If I remember right, with the Deka dyes, just dunk and leave for a while, them wash.

I don't know how the polyester will take though. Doubtful.

Auroranorth, I had a frien who used some natural dyes for her yarns and got gorgeous soft colors. I'm not doing it now because I need brights.
