Louisiana Governor Advises Women to Get Gun

Killer's profile

Because of a serial killer in the area, women in Louisiana are being advised to carry a gun for protection.
What do you think about this advice?

Helen, I don't understand the concept of arming yourself anyway. The chances of having your gun handy while you're being attacked is slim imo. (It's one of my biggest beefs with the NRA. They go on about how many lives are saved by arming yourself, but haven't produced any evidence to back that up.)

There was no sign of forced entry, so the killer must have been dressed as a serviceman or acted helpless or something. Would a gun have helped?

One good thing, is the mothers getting together to try and help solve these crimes. what a difficult, wonderful thing for them to be doing.

me too!

I think that it's irresponsible for the Governor of Louisiana to suggest that all women arm themselves.

What if a woman (or multiple women) thought she might be in danger and started shooting? Would the governor let these women off if they killed the wrong people?

Fred, are you saying they should carry guns or shouldn't?

I agree with the governor.

Fred, I misunderstood....I thought that you were agreeing with Kraftdinner.

The governor said.....
"Most people don't ever want to use a gun to protect themselves -- that's the last thing they want to do -- but if you know how and you have a situation with some fruitcake running around, like they've got right now, it sure can save you a lot of grief," he said".

I wonder if the governor has considered the number of "fruitcakes" that will be running around with guns to "save themselves a lot of grief"?

and the number of people that will be shot accidentally
and the number of women who will shoot their husbands or friends by mistake...thinking they are the killer.
or the number of women who will shoot someone...and then find themselves charged with manslaughter or murder?

Fred

"Some" women are fruitcakes...just as "some" men are fruitcakes. LOL!!!

In other words, I would not feel safe knowing that all people in my neighborhood were armed.

The governor chose to use the word, "fruitcake", meaning a foolish, eccentric, or crazy person

You must agree that there are a number of those people in our society. Right?

Wouldn't you agree though Fred, that it could open the doors for some women that might have a chip on their shoulder?

Although I grew up in a family that all had firearms I have to say that many of the people I know are not mature enough to be entrusted with a pistol. That will upset a lot of right to bear arms people but I also think there are a lot of people on the road that should not be driving cars. If you think about it the danger level and responsibility are about the same for a gun or a car.

I carried a gun for years and never pulled it out and waved it around to get my way or to intimidate someone. Never got into trouble with it. Never had an arrest involving the gun although I came close once shooting at a dog that threatened my wife. However I was taught from an early age what a heavy responsibility it was to have and use. I also was trained to be fairly accurate and aware of what it could and could not do.

My mom always trained me never to put my hand to the weapon until I had already decided that there was no other option to talk or run away and I had decided and firmly commited to shoot.

To make a blanket appeal for people to pack a gun without any regard to their skill level and disposition is assuming way too much.

People today have a very poor grasp of being responsible for their actions. They all want to be victems.

I see way too many hot headed kids to day that will get in a strangers face or make rude gestures and speak without any thought to the consequences.

Even with police I have seen too many that as soon as you don't agree with them the first thing they do is put their hand on the butt of their gun. I always stop at that point and tell them they are threatening me by that action and resolve that before returning to the previous issue.

Exactly gravid!!! "The right to bare arms" is so overdone though. Wasn't it meant to be a Civil War thing?

People aren't trained properly, but it's become a way of life. How do you change that?

I recall reading a article a number years ago about a officer of the law who shot himself while cleaning his gun. He was talking to his girlfriend on the phone when he discharged the firearm. So even when people recieve the proper training, that is no assurance that will handle a firearm safely. So should the police even carry firearms?

As it stands now, I think the Police should carry guns to protect themselves, but it sure would be better if no one was allowed to own one. They're only good for one thing.

I agree, the law should carry firearms!
However, I also believe that a citizen should be allowed to carry a firearm for protection, once the have demonstrated a level of proficiency in skill and safety. It has proven to be crime deterrent.

Hello kcpick4u!

I had to go out and missed your post. I agree that everyone should have the right to own a gun but I would hope that only people well screened and trained should have the right to carry guns in public.

In the case of the Louisiana governor arming all women with only a short training session to defend themselves is a major mistake in my opinion.

The governor probably made a few brownie points with the NRA.

I've noticed, based on your posts here that you know a lot about guns.

Helen

I believe that, although they have always been in the majority, the number of dim-witted elected officials is at an all-time high.

And if you are worried about how much training you need to carry a gun - consider how much traing you need to be a politician.
