Powell Heckled at Earth Summit

"JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has faced a stormy reception at the Earth Summit in Johannesburg as he sought to defend America's record on the environment. "

"Powell was repeatedly forced to halt his speech to delegates as he was booed and heckled on Wednesday -- the last day of the conference."

AND all of this for a man who is quitting the Bush Adminsitration out of disgust too! Colin Powell: Planning for an Exit

Cyn, the Fat Lady can sing all that she wants to. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I don't care if no one posts in threads that I create - I'm going to create them anyway. I don't care if no one responds to any posts that I make in a thread, because I'm going to post what I think anyway.

I hope he does quit. They're making a fool out of him. He has too much class to be in this administration.

Sorry, Cyn. Just a bit touchy. Thought you were referring to me. That's what I get for making myself a dart board.

Choco, I hope that he does quit as well. At this point, I don't think that being the token black at the White House is going to usher him in as the first black president of the United States and that's what Colin Powell and a lot of other folks wanted. The RepubliKlan Party just wanted to garner more black votes away from their friendly rivals and close companions, the DemoRatic Party. I'll bet Bush himself told Powell what a snowball's chance he had of ever being made president - appointed or otherwise!

Actually, Colin Powell has always been emphatic that he does *not* wish to run for president, even when others pushed for it.

I think Colin Powell was marginalized in his position as Sec. of State a while back. He's one of the least publicized of SOSs we've seen for the last few administrations.

JMHO, I think the American people would have been better off not sending any top officials in this case. Maybe Bush family arrogance has rubbed off. It is time for him to depart.

He came at the end of the Summit, spent very little time and ignored a speaker:

JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 4

"Powell arrived during a speech by the Palestinian minister of the environment, who condemned Israeli occupation of the West Bank on environmental grounds."

"The Israelis have killed 150,000 birds, cows and sheep. Thousands of beehives have been buried alive," Yousef Abu Safieh said in Arabic. Powell, chatting with aides, did not put on earphones providing a translation of Abu Safieh's speech. "<snip>

"In addition to his 10-minute appearance at the conference hall, Powell held a half-dozen meetings with European, African and Asian officials and hosted a number of events designed to showcase U.S. commitment to clean water and renewable resources." <snip>

"My only regret is that on this trip I cannot visit each and every one of the Congo Basin nations," said Powell, whose African trip takes him to three countries in a little over 48 hours. On Thursday, Powell is to travel to Angola and then to Gabon, where he has scheduled 10 MINUTES to walk through a rain forest."

Powell grew up in the South Bronx. I did a tour up there for a few years. As far as I'm concerned that anybody that got out alive can do whatever the hell they want.

The Bronx has always been a rough neighborhood I always heard, Cyn. That you made it out alibve is also a miracle.

aposter, this adminsitration has had Powell act as a mere messageboy in a hotel since Bush took office. It is reminecent of Bush, Sr. getting rid of Dan Quayle the same way during his term as President. In fact, Bush, Sr. used to get rid of Bush, Jr. a lot that way too back then. Hmm . . .
