Was reading this article last night and thought I'd share it with anyone interested. It's a long two part article.

Terrifying moments in the sky. Air traffic controllers on duty when the four planes were hijacked reveal what they saw and heard that day.  Tom Brokaw talks to the air traffic controllers who cleared the skies during last year's Sept. 11 attacks.

I've always wondered about the flights that were diverted and were forced to land short of their destination. I haven't read much about the people on those flights who were not where they were supposed to be.

I did read in RD about one flight that landed somewhere overseas (Denmark?) and the townspeople put them up, fed them, etc. The people on the flight set up a scholarship fund for the people in the town.

Not my name on ebay.

Hi Valleygirl - Yes, that was our Canadian friends and neighbors. Newfoundland was one place, if memory serves me. And it wasn't just one flight, I believe it was [somewhere around] 30 or more different flights.

I hadn't read about the scholarships though. What a wonderful way to show their appreciation.

Wish I'd seen this program when it was on. I'd really never thought about the tremendous job they accomplished getting all those planes down safely in such a short period of time. I was impressed.

What I kept thinking about, aside from the horrid tragedy of course, was all the mail and ebay packages etc. etc. that was never delivered. I don't mean to sound crass, but I haven't heard anything about money/checks/items/catalog orders/the whole gamut of stuff that was destroyed along with the planes. And how on earth would anyone know if his/her sent mail ever reached its destination? No one would know which plane it was on. So I can only imagine all the catching up/bill paying, etc. that had to go on later. And what about pets being sent to other destinations?
