Oh, boo-#*!@-hoo, Microsoft. My heart bleeds for the bastards that want to control our computers. They sell an operating system, and want the whole shebang.

MS knows that if the govt accepts and uses Linux, developers within the govt and in the private sector will bring linux into the mainstream as a competitor.

The more sh&t like this I read, the less sympathy I have towards software producers, music companies, and movie makers, for the loss of revenue due to file sharing culture that is developing.

This link was over on OTWA about a band selling their own music on ebay and getting VERO'd. Check out the endless string of notes link if you want a laugh.

The recording industry execs are parasites on the artists. That's who are making the bucks. They also want to control what you listen to. Look at the wasteland of FM radio now. Look at what has happened to the old free streaming radio stations.

Short sighted strategy, IMO. I buy my music now from artists and resellers.

Microsoft. What can you say about them? What does a mountain climber do once they've climbed Mount Everest? They shoot for the Moon!

In the future, Bill Gates will own EVERYTHING. Not satisfied at making you subscribe to his operating system, soon you'll be paying for many new things that you couldn't imagine now. The next time that you save that Word document, the system will automatically encrypt it. You want to open the document back? You'll have to pay a Royalty to Microsoft to do that! That's right! When you put that operating system onto your computer, you agreed that ALL of the contents; i.e. the electronic data instantly became the property of Microsoft, because Microsoft owns the operating system. But that's not all! You'll need a credit card just to turn your computer on. A credit card slot will be appearing where the old floppy disk drive used to be and you'll need to pay Bill Gates by the minute for using your computer!

Microsoft has been expanding into the consumer market for years. Microsoft code has been going into tiny electronic brains placed in such things as your toaster oven. The next time that you go to open your computer-controlled refrigerator, you'd better have your credit card handy! Otherwise, you won't be able to get that glass of milk for Tommy. The possibilities are limitless for Bill Gates to expand and to control the world, as Microcrap sinks it's teeth into telephony, you'll be billed a surcharge every month on your communications bill, as Microsoft will only LICENSE the code to telephone companies and a portion of your bill will have to go into Bill Gate's coffers!

Science Fiction? Would you be scared to know that these very things have been proposed in Microsoft's boardroom at one time or another?

What you can do - same as me - I just ordered my first computer from the Walmart web site with the Lindows version of Linux pre-installed.

$200 for the 850mhz box with CD 10 gig HD 128 meg of ram a key board/mouse ethernet modem and a number of programs like a browser and a word processing suite and rights to download more off the web.

$200 total.

Let us know how it works. I would be interested in knowing how or if applications such as file sharing, URL rippers, CD burning, etc will work with this OS software.

There are strong, stable Linux/Unix applications which meet or exceed M$ performance FREE for download all over the net. Some require you to learn to compile for your version of xxnix, but it's really no big deal. You'll find that your Linux or Unix machine NEVER crashes. I have been using a Unix version on two computers for 2 months now, they are on continuously 24 hours a day, crunching SETI data as well as our usual usage, and have not hung, stalled or crashed or otherwise needed a restart since we switched to the new system. My word processor/spreadsheet program will open Word files and also save it's own documents so that someone unfortunate enough to have to still use M$ apps can open them, and all other vestiges of the evil empire have long ago been purged from my systems, and are not missed...If you are willing to go to a little (very little) trouble, microsloth can be made irrelevant to home systems...

gravid, p.s., best of luck with the Lindows system! There will be a slight learning curve to be sure, but it is designed specifically to appeal to M$ refugees....

Very interesting to hear about. I hope to hear more in the future as well. I get tired of my Winn200Pro pc locking up all the time. Almost as bad as Win98.

Well I got my box from Walmart and it is not too bad learning to use it.
Of course everything is in different places.

I went ahead and bought the $99 membership to their software service that installs the programs for you online ready to run. Seemed cheap. Later I will learn to install from command line - but I have enough to do now.

Hooking it to my DSL with PPPoE was easy - except for the fact Ameritech said Linux is not supported and tried to hang up on my wife.

She made it crystal clear if he did not tell her the host name and DNS numbers of the servers we would be dpopping ALL Ameritech services and telling them it was because Dale in support blew her off. She can be very persuasive on the phone.

I don't need a lot of the web authoring and programming tools but I still found about six programs I had to have today.

just think, if you had to buy JUST a new copy of Office, it would cost you what, 400 bucks? Now you have over a thousand app's and growing to choose from for your 99 bucks...heh, heh...nice going Borillar...tip: look into some browsers besides Internet Exploder...there are lots of them. Mozilla for Linux comes to mind....

Wow, what a great deal! Can someone without a lot of computer experience install and operate these programs?

I'm really tired of getting messages that "Windows needs to shut down...would you like to send a report?" Whatever I happen to be doing is lost. And, after sending the report, I never receive an answer.

The installing part is real easy. You look down through lists of programs and can look at some details about them if you are not sure - and then just click on one button and it down loads and installs it. Period. You don't have to do anything after it downloads - it is installed and ready to run. The president of the company said his 5 year old boy downloads programs to his computer.....

It came with Netscape7.0 installed.
It will also read Microsoft Word Excell and Power Point files.
I also installed AOL instant messaging.
I installed Acrobat

I have been using 4.7 for ages because I know all the details of how to make it work but time to move on..

I down loaded a file sharing program called Limewire and am looking forward to what I can trade, and to get music for my wife.

Yah, it's time to move from Netscape 4.73 myself. More and more pages have new extentions - ones that this older brower can't recognize and display.

I looked at download.cnet.com for the newer Netscape, but so many people wrote in about so many problems with the brower - plus the tons of spyware in it, that I wouldn't even download a copy to try out. All I want is a browser that displays all pages correctly and doesn't spy on me and report back to software company each page that I visit, every image file or program file that I download onto my pc, what I buy from whom on the Internet, etc. AND -- AND -- I would gladly PAY $$MONEY$$ for that kind of updated browser! Unfortunately, a recent hunt found nothing that fit the bill.

The Lindows system offer sounds really good. Maybe I'm doomed to have my work computer stay Microcrap, but perhaps a home computer would be in line. Let us know about the games and the browsing and how it all goes, gravid!

I'm not sure what games it will run. There are 4 simple games already loaded on it and more you can download on the click and run site. Only game I ever ran was Missle Command archade style game. Got so good at it I could keep it going for extra rounds on and on so got bored with it and deleted it.

The Browsing works fine in Netscape7 - but if it is reporting home I don't know. If it is the report must be boring someone....

I did have trouble loading a Word file today. I converted it to a Rich Text File to load it. Not supposed to have to do that....

I didn't get to play with it today because a fellow called me up to come work with him - and he treats me too well ($$$)to turn down.
