Nodding Jesus Adds Touch of Kitsch to Christmas

Dec 6, 10:08 am ET

LONDON (Reuters) - A nodding Jesus and a weeping Santa are adding a touch of kitsch to Christmas this year, topping an Internet tacky-gift chart Friday.
The eight-inch hand-painted "Jesus Bobble Head," designed to sit in the space on a car's back shelf, tops the "Twelve days of Kitschmas" poll by satirical Web Site www.shipoffools.com.

The Web Site gives a link through to the manufacturers, who said: "Of course, nobody knows what Jesus really looked like, but this is our best guess since we know He had a head that moved."

Other notable entries include a 47-foot-high inflatable "Bouncy Church" at number two, some "heartmeltingly cute Nativity Bears" at number 10 and a pair of "Crucifix Boxer Shorts" at number three.

"While there are gadgets a-plenty which minister to the Christian car bumper or the Christian refrigerator, the Christian loins have long been sadly neglected," said shipoffools.

"They too need to feel the touch of the gospel and be clothed in righteousness," it added.

The bouncy church can be rented for events like weddings for 2,000 pounds ($3,000) a go, but has so far seen no business.

Those seeking a more sentimental gift might opt for the porcelain "Weeping Santa," which takes fourth place.

"Wreck someone's seasonal happiness with this 5.25-inch Santa," said shipoffools. "Genuine painted tears. His statuette, like the statues of all Catholic saints, now weeps, bringing a welcome note of misery to Christmas."
