" . . . attempts to impose restrictions on research have increased since Sept. 11, 2001, out of fear that some information could help terrorists."
"University leaders worry that the trend could jeopardize the nation's tradition of open science . . . "
Secrecy . . . it's War Time . . . didn't ya know? Tight Pockets Sink Corporations - especially if you don't spend, spend, spend! Science -- brilliant and highly trained desert arabs and assorted nomands on their camels and in their tents might make some use of new physics research or make new advanced multipolymer military materials out by their cameldung campfires at night -- can you image it? LOL!

One thing that could be used against us is our own technology. It requires a great degree of knowledge to use our own tech against us and little capital equipment.
Our eagerness and openness with science and technology allowed the hi-jackers to operate passenger aircarft.
Openness in our universities about nuclear power plants and/or biological weapons can create problems for us and opportunities for terrorists.
Information, just like any other commodity, must be managed. It must be managed differently, but managed none the less, both for economic and physical security reasons.

I see the paranoia in that. However, I still contend that terrorists do not have the resources of large governments to create gigantic industrrial programs for them to use modern science. I mean, we aren't talking about making soda-pop bottles. Modern physics and biological breakthroughs is science way above even most modern industrtialized nations to take advantage of it. How then are arabs riding camelback through the deserts supposed to be able to ustilize any portion of it? I mean, how many of them have evn a simple education to read and to write? And of those that can, they dispise science as being Western, so they are unlikely to even get the education that it takes to understand the articles written.
I'm just not satisfied with that. I need something besides their stated position to tell me what good it does anyone to hold onto information of this high a level.
The article, if the reader has read it, refers to breakthroughs in Artifical Intelligence. I can see where desert arabs would be thrilled to make use of that branch of knowledge! LOL!
So, I wonder WHO they are really hiding this information from? And for what purpose, exactly?
