I'm just wondering, if you live in a colder climate, how much do you pay monthly for heat?

I live in Michigan, north of Detroit. I have gas heating and a gas hot water heater. My apartment is just under 700 square feet, and includes a heated basement. I'm on the monthly budget plan and I pay the same amount every month, winter and summer, that is... $37.00 per month.

Or $440.00 per year.

I also live in MI just North of the armpit and my heat is folded into my condo fee. I'd have to dig out the financial statements for last year find the number for gas and divide by my square footage percentile rank.
I is a fraction of $196 so probably pretty close to Yeager.
I pay more for communications than utilities.

I pay month to month. At this time of year, our 1,100 sq. ft. apartment costs about $60.00 a month for electricity. That doesn't sound like much to many people, but you have to realize that up until Enron soaked California, that figure would have been in the $40 to $45 range. Because So. California deregulated and screwed themselves believing Republican lies about the "benefits" of deregulating things, for some reason our hydroelectric costs shot up as well and we pay nearly 20% more than we used to. So, we just wear our sweaters and cut back on heat and electricity as much as possible.

You lucky bastards!

I live in Canada! I paid $1800.00CDN (about $1200.00US)in Electric bills for my 3 BR Cottage with a basement.

Electric heat of course and hot water.

Plus I work from home so computer, printers, monitor, stereo/tv are on almost all of the time.

I live in Cleveland, Ohio and our last gas bill (for the month of December) was $277! And that's keeping the heat at 70! I live in an older two story home. From what I have heard, due to the last couple of mild winters, the good folks at Dominion have decided to raise the gas prices this year to make up for what they lost the last couple of years. Could be just a rumor, but by the looks of my gas bill, must not be far from the truth. We used 1.5 times more gas this December than last!! Kind of like gasoline going from $1.29 to $1.59 in a matter of a couple of hours. (Paid $1.29 at 7:30 am and by 10:00 am it was at $1.59)

We have a small house in Maryland with gas heat, hot water and stove. With the thermostat set during the day at 68 and 65 degrees at night, the average price during the winter is 160 per month.

I'm envious too canvid!! Heating runs around $125.00 (average) each month and electricity averages around $120.00 monthly with me. Gas is up to 77 cents a litre here ($3.08 a gallon), cigarettes are $7.25 a package and garbage pick-up is $1.50 per bag. Property taxes are $2000.00 a year and I'm in the country with no services except garbage p/u (which everyone pays for).

I just wanted to vent!! Canada's expensive!

stopwhining,

Obviously you don't have air conditioning. In Michigan, it gets pretty hot in the summer with all the humidlity. I have two window air conditioners, both older, 8500 btu and 5000 btu. In the summer, my electric bill is usually about 35-40 bucks per month. TV on all the time, as well as the computer.

I hate hot weather and Michigan is the farest south that I would ever want to live.

Wish I could afford to do what my dad did - lived in Ohio during the summer. He had a house that was a stage coach stop built in the 1800's with two foot thick stone walls, and huge oak timbers. Never needed air conditioning.
In the winter he had a place near Tampa surrounded by orange trees. Used to send me big old Miniola oranges.

i live in a new house with ceiling fans, nice ones i bot from expo, the kind with strong motors and big blades.i keep house temperature at 80 and leave the fan on all day and bedroom fan all nite.
my water heater which is gas heated does not give me hot water,it gives me warm water in the summer.
my biggest bill is water and sewage which is 39 dollars.
the celing fans make a big difference, make sure you get the good ones.

We heat with wood. When I have time to cut mesquite, it's free if I don't factor in the wear and tear on vehicle and tools and my back. I can't buy mesquite, because the chi-chi restaurants and the refugee Californios pay 400 dollars a cord for it..so I buy juniper or oak at 140.00. The last few years we have burned about 1 1/2 cords over a 3 month period. This old house stays warm as long as it's sunny..the walls are 20" thick mud.

If they pay that for Mesquite I would sell it rather than burn it.

Most of that mesquite comes from new owners of small properties who come in, buy an acre or two and then want to make it green, like it was wherever they moved from. So they have it bulldozed and flattened and plant grass and foreign trees all over it, using water like madmen. The bulldozer guys aren't dumb, so they offer to haul all off that wood..then cut and cure it and resell it. Any mesquite I cut is pretty carefully selected, and I only prune off of existing big trees. I like mesquite and the sheep fatten up nicely in the fall eating the fallen beans, If I let the cord price get to me I could clear this place in a few years and have nothing left...
