There's no breakdown of where they're left, but most are left in fat people because there's more room.

There are over 20,000 doctors who have had their licenses suspended or revoked for offenses ranging from practicing medicine while under the effects of alcohol or drugs to amputating the wrong limb.

Considering what they charge for those instruments I'm surprised the penny pinching HMOs don't throw a fit about losing them.

Maybe an arithmetic review is in order. LOL!

A similar study by Kaiser revealed that counts are inaccurate, even though they are done four times....the first when the instruments are set up or the sponges are unpackaged, a second before the surgical procedure begins, a third as closure begins, and the final count performed during skin closure.

Then there are the scapegoats , the nursing staff. who know how to count but according to this study allow an incorrect count to be accepted

When counting fails, even the use of x-rays, to detect the radiopaque sponges sometimes fails.

Carpenters know to measure twice, cut once. Seems like a surgical team should be able to measure four times, cut once without leaving tools behind.

Make it a $10,00 fine for the surgeon to leave something behind and the problem will only happen once every ten years or so.

I am trying to figure out why the Republicans claim the justice system is out of control when awarding damages for medical malpractice, but it is not out of control when assessing criminal sentences.

If we need caps on medical malpractice, why no "caps" on capital punishment ?

How about this for a solution -- do away with all damages for medical malpractice and all penalties for killing doctors.

Then if a doctor kills or injures you or a loved one, you can kill them.

So we have partially done away with the death penalty and there will be no need for malpractice insurance. AND it would be a boon for life insurance for doctors.

But I suppose after awhile doctors will be complaining that life insurance was too high.

re: about killing doctors

Psychiatrists rank in the risky occupation categoty along with police and prison guards. They are often shot.

If the medical/insurance situation in this country is not resolved, doctors and insurance agents may be added to the list.

There is a limit to what people will tolerate.

Re: killing docs

Sounds like you have been living in a cave and don't realize all the nut cases out there that would blame the doc no matter that it was a hopeless case.
We are dealing with two seperate families in our extended relatives right now that have a member with Alzheimers just like we went through and they are both in totally irrational denial and would love to have anyone else to blame as a way of feeling less responsible themselves. They would feel a great sense of closure to be able to plug the doc and walk away feeling someone - anyone was to "blame".
Every family that had a less than perfect child born somebody would probably shoot the doc. Easier than blaming yourself.
That is the essense of animism and witchcraft that human nature adopts so easy - that nothing just happens - someone is always to blame.

Crops failed this year? Burn a couple witches.
Bad wind knock your hut down? Toss a virgin in the volcano.
Uncle Harry died on the table? Shot the doc.

Gravid, your posts made me wonder - if a person had a scalpel left in them and didn't know it, and was caught at the airport, what do you think would happen?? What if he was from the middle east?

Like an eye for and eye mlecher... imagine how ridiculous life would be!

Sorry, I couldn't make myself slog through this entire thread but thought the above remark was all I needed to know and also gave me a laugh.

Hope you're doing well, Ken...
