I used to live on Barton Skyway, and take my bike down the creek way to Loop 360. Voted over in Barton Hills, swam at Barton Springs. I wonder if they've done any sampling at Zilker Park?

Awful.

Austin is one of the few major metropolitan areas in the nation that has no toxic waste site on the federal government's Superfund cleanup list.

Superfund is expected to have less than $30 million remaining by the end of the year. President Bush's 2003 budget does not provide for reauthorization of the Superfund tax, and the White House has been sharply critical of it.

And on the Environmental Protection Agency page there is not a word about the problem in Texas or any mention of the other polluted sites... just a picture of Christie Todd Whitman with a big grin.

I'm sorry to hear about your area, junquemama. I hope that at least they have closed the creeks to swimmers.

Maybe not so surprizingly is that the most toxic exhaust into the air to cause cancer is NOT from automobiles or "dirty" smokestacks or factories! The most dangerous output is from cigarette smoke which contains more cancer-causing agents than any other substance that we pollute our air and environment with. In fact, it is so toxic that it has been well scientifically established to cause cancer in the lungs of even those who don't smoke cigarettes, but inhale it from someone else who does!

Helen,No..people still swim and fish in those creeks. On the east side of Austin,The bridges have small signs that say "NO FISHING"..The people who fish there, dont know why the sign is there and for others a problem reading english.

Well, this is why children are being allowed to swim in pools contaminated with benzine and mercury.... "City literature describes the pool as "one of the crown jewels of Austin." It attracts 350,000 paid visits a year and as many as 500,000 visitors, including free after-hours visits."

And so, children, who are more likely to swim in these contaminated pools and play in the dirt and who are more succeptible to carcinogens than adults are having their health traded for money.

And the Environmental Protection Agency has failed to clean it up because George Bush has cut the money.

How shameful!!!

"In fact, Texas Department of Health experts have told me that the exposure to contaminants while swimming at Barton Springs is much less than what you are exposed to every day in what you eat and in the air you breathe," she said.

Well DUH! This is Texas, the world's most polluted state.
Now compare it to the pits of Hell.

For some reason, this thread is reminding me of an "All In The Family" episode wherein Gloria was trying to persuade her dad, Archie, that guns were dangerous and should be outlawed.

"Daddy," she whined, "people are killed by handguns in their own homes every day!"

And Archie replied, "Would it make you feel better, little goil, if they'd been pushed out of windows?"

There's wisdom in Archie's 'woids' -- a wisdom we-who-want-to-live-forever-Americans lost on our way to the gym...

Just a few hundred years ago, the average life-expectancy was 40 - 45 years of age. Mozart managed to assemble in 35 years of living a musical legacy that is with us to this day.

There are scores of others throughout history who accomplished a lifetime's work in their BRIEF lifetimes -- even though their allotted years were but half of what *we* expect.

Cleopatra

Jesus

(Add your own)

While I don't mean to diminish the seriousness of your thread, Junque, think about this: doesn't it seem likely that our preoccupation with 'environmental' or 'genetic' deaths has more to do with our inability to eke out "full" ( - as in fulfilling) lives (and our fear of not doing so) than it does with the actual cause of our deaths?

SPOT QUIZ FOR EVERYONE READING THIS THREAD!

If you knew you had five years to live, what would you do? What is it you'd want to accomplish? What would be your legacy?

Why aren't you living with those eventualities in mind NOW?

Damn Pat!Just a hit and run?..Maybe my posting did seem like ecking out life,Thats far from what my message is.
"Awareness"..because people dont know. The people who have "lived"need to pass on warnings for those who havent started to live, our young and gullible.Ive lived a very full life, and had fun thru out most of it.If I were to die tomorrow,I would know there wasnt anything I missed.I am greedy tho,I miss friendships that passed because of "Mans" ability to destroy life.

I read a saying once, that may show the real difference between a man and woman. The earth is considered female,A woman nutures the earth,A man wants to conquer it.
Im just angry,Something so perfect as the earth, had to be destroyed by greed.

Jesus and Cleopatra were both betrayed..and their deaths were suicide .
