How very, very sad! My prayers go out to the men for their survival and to the families that must be suffering terribly right now.

What a tragic disaster.

People in Texas are being warned not to touch debris or pieces. People in Texas are reporting explosive sounds and debris.

Possible causes are being mentioned.

Terrorism, although mentioned is stated as very unlikely.

On launch day, a piece of insulating foam on the external fuel tank came off during liftoff and was believed to have struck the left wing of the shuttle.

Leroy Cain, the lead flight director in Mission Control, had assured reporters Friday that engineers had concluded that any damage to the wing was considered minor and posed no safety hazard.

Reamon - Thanks for pointing out my error! I, of course, meant men and women. Somedays it just doesn't pay to leave your nice warm bed!

Again, what a tragedy!

"God Bless the Astronauts and Their Families."

Don't you think they've been blessed enough today?

My gosh what a stupid thing to say.

For the rest of their lives these poor families will have their "Blessing" of today burnt into their minds eye.

God had nothing to do with this.

Its a sad loss for the families and the space program. Let us hope they find out where the failure was.

helen, thank you so much for including the photos and information on the crew.

I can't even begin to express how this feels right now - I guess I am one of the millions of Americans that are shell-shocked...

edited to add - canvid13, what a rude comment!

Do a little research on canvid13 and you will find that this is nothing new for him. A pile of manure has more class.

It's a sad day. I just don't feel that any sanctomonious bs is worthy of what these poor families are feeling right now.

I can assure you that those kind of comments aren't helping them now.

Their lives have changed forever and there's nothing that anyone of us or anyone else can do to help them.

Canvid, people who believe in religion and a god *do* draw comfort from their beliefs--and from the prayers of others who share those beliefs.

Yes, and people who have beliefs also wage war, blow up people that don't believe the same as others, etc. You know, wacky leaders of country's claiming God is on their side and crap like that.

As someone that doesn't believe anyone on this planet has a clue or that anyone that ever lived on this planet has ever had a clue to whatever there is out there I just am tired of this stuff.

I'm upset too about what happened this morning.

Maybe it's your God telling you that he/she isn't happy with current US policy?

Maybe God isn't happy about the Mideast?

Maybe something just went wrong and these poor people lost their lives and their families will be scarred by it for the rest of their lives?

So when I'm grieving and upset, and I see someone say something as perpostrous about being blessed after they've been blown up into bits and pieces in a fireball I get more upset.

It's a very sad day.

Canvid: being upset, as we all are, does not give you the right to lash out at others. BTW, the god referred to is not "my" god. I am an athiest and have no such belief.

I'm sure that we are all equally saddened by this event regardless of our belief or non belief in religion.

::Terrorism, although mentioned is stated as very unlikely. ::

Did NASA ever believe this or did some idiot TV commentator mention it during the past two hours of constant coverage where they ran out of thing to say after the first 10 minutes?

I was just so relieved to know however exactly where the President and Vice President were, what they were doing and who they were informed by. I know the first quesion that came to my mind when I heard about this was .... OMG! Where is Dick Cheney?

Don't these people understand that two hours of babble numbs people to reality of the situation?

Bunni if you are an atheist you have a belief. You have to believe that there is no God to be an atheist, thus a belief.

And you are right. I'm sorry for lashing out. I just saw another board full of this God nonsense and lost it when I saw it at the roundtable. I thought this forum was a bit less right wing and a bit more advanced in thought and understanding.

The mention of terrorism was mentioned in several news stories and by TV commentators but as I pointed out earlier, it was discounted.

I don't understand your concern about Cheney as it relates to this tragedy?

Helen - I was being sarcastic. Pointing out how ridiculous the special break to White House correspondents updating us on who was updated, where and by whom are. In my opinion this type of gratuitus reporting trivializes the greater event.

Additionally I don't think anyone over the the IQ of 27 believes that terrorists we able to blow of the Space Shuttle over Texas but every time I flip channels I hear some twit mentioning terrorists ( even when you are ruling it out the fact that it is ALWAYS being mentioned is inflamitory ).

(Interesting that 3 of the 5 spanish stations I pick up from across the border are also running constant coverage.)

canvid13,
Sorry my comment upset you. I didn't say they were blessed by the tragic event. You took it on yourself to twist the words around.

What gave me a second of comfort, wishing a blessing on the crew and their families, Is of no concern to you.
You insignificant pile of snake dung.
