I know you are trying to put a good spin on it - but the only way they were good was if they were not fought the problem they solved would have been much much worse.
Often the good you cited was a side effect not the real reason the war was fought.
If the wars had been presented as for the express purpose of helping the Jews or Colored people they would have been in deep dodo.

I do not like war, and do not want war. I'll bet the majority of people do not like war, and do not want war.

But it is, unfortunatly, necessary sometimes.
(and that comment is not in anyway directed to the present day problem we face, just war in general)

Notice that these Wars were never fought against PEOPLE, but to fight evil regeimes? Realize that it is likely that we, the American People, will have to end up in a real full-scale War with our government to restore Democracy and our American Way.

would you rather have not seen these (most) wars fought; The Revolutionary War, The Civil War, WWII? I don't understand.

So the Revulationary war was 'rightly', the Civil War was 'rightly' WWII was 'rightly'.

Might makes right

Austbounty, all that you have posted, are these the sentiments of the majority of Australians, in other words.... they don't like the U.S. either?

NearTheSea, the points that you are trying to make are not possible either to suggest or to respond to. Each War that you brought up has to be seen within the context of its own times, with its own morals, culture, and perils. Furthermore, as each day goes along, more and more historical information is brought to the public and it is re-writing history. For instance, Thomas Jefferson was a smuggler, like Old Man Kennedy was, and joined into the political doings of the revolution because it benefited his criminal practices by keeping the British occupied with putting down rebellions.

How is any of us supposed to answer whether we think such and such a War was fought for good reasons?

Before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, there was an awful lot of German Nazi sympathy here in this country. A *LOT*! Therefore, was it good for us to punish the Nazis in Germany for being stupid when the rest of the world did not want to take Jewish refugees? Are all nations not in some way responsible for what happened to them, then? Yes, many are -- including us! So what kind of Right and Wrong will you bring up then?

W-A-R is never a good thing, because innocent people get harmed and killed. Soldiers, whose job it is to provide security, now suddenly become aggressors and are sent in as cannon fodder knowingly by generals who want to see what will happen. WAR is the ABSOLUTE LAST RESORT of the desperate!

The questions then are, "Are we so desperate now as to fight a War of aggression against Iraq in order to make Iraq comply with UN Resolutions?" and "Is this REALLY so damned important? What about US and our economy and Al-Queda and Osama and Terrorists? WE HAVE MUCH MORE PRESSING THINGS TO BE DOING WITH OUR TIME AND MONEY -- don't you think?"

Your bring specifics, that, sure could be argued, ie;Jefferson, the Jews etc.

Overall, if the Colonials did not fight the British..... the outcome today would be?

Overall if North and South (here) didn't fight, and let things go they way they were, the outcome today would be?

If the Nazis were to keep going, along with the Japanese, again, the outcome would be?

and over and over....

Can destinys be changed, futures be altered... possibly.

I agree! No I do not like war! I don't want war! But, there are times when its necessary.

Is the UN going to draft article 1442, 1443, 1444 until its too darn late?

Yes this server must be going... double posts and threads ..

Thought a few would enjoy this little poem that was e-mailed me.
Amen,
Reverend Colin

A protest raged on a courthouse lawn,
Round a makeshift stage, they charged on,
Fifteen Hundred or more they say,
Had come to burn the flag that day.
A boy held up the folded flag,
Cursed it and called it a Dirty Rag.

An old man rushed through the angry crowd,
With a rusty shotgun shouldered proud.
His uniform jacket was old and tight,
He had polished each buton, shiny and bright.

He crossed that stage with a soldier's grace,
Until he and the boy stood face to face.
"Freedom of Speech" the old man said,
"Is worth dying for, Good men are dead,
so you can stand on the courthouse lawn,
And talk us down from dusk til dawn,
But before any flag gets burned today,
This old man is going to have his say!

My father died on a foreign shore,
In a war they said would end all war.
But Tommy and I wasn't even full grown,
Before we fought in a war of our own.
And Tommy died on Iwo Jima's Beach,
In the shadow of a hill he couldn't quite reach.

Where five good men raised this flag so high,
That the whole darn world could see it fly.
I got this bum leg that I still drag,
Fighting for this same old flag.

Now there's but one shot in this old gun,
So now it's time to decide which one,
Which one of you will follow our lead,
To stand and die for what you believe?
For as sure as there is a rising sun,
You'll burn in hell 'fore this flag burns, son."

Now that riot never came to pass,
The crowd got quiet and that can of gas,
Got set aside as they walked away,
To talk about what they heard this day.
And the boy who had called it a "Dirty Rag",
Handed the old soldier the folded flag.

So the Battle of the flag this day was won,
By a tired old soldier with a rusted gun,
Who for one last time had to show to some,
THIS FLAG MAY FADE,
YET THESE COLORS DON'T RUN.

NearTheSea, you still can not make that point. What would thing be like if we hadn't? Speculation. Realize that today we have things like the United Nations and diplomatic methods unheard of before. We have democracies and dictatorships where once all was monarchies.

King George III would not have been able to hold onto the colonies much longer. Too much money was spent and too little of it was being returned to the treasury. While they had their military defeats, the reason why the British finally pulled out was because France was coming in on our side and they could not afford to fight both the colonialists and the French. Has we kept dumping tea into the harbor, we might have eventually have ended up with self-government but without the bloodshed. Maybe. Who knows?

If we had not had the Civil War, what would life have been like? Slavery would have ended within a few more decades at any rate. Britain gave up slavery and other European countries were following suit. Pretty soon, the abolitionists would have been able to exert enough pressure on plantation owners to give up on human slavery. We simply hurried up the process when Lincoln, in a last desperate act of the War, threw this Monkey Wrench at the South. Certainly, with the coming of the Industrial Age, there would have been little economic incentive for plantations to use problematic humans to do the work.

WWII -- don't get me started guessing. Just look at how the Bush Administration is copycatting Adolph Hitler's rise to power and making America a mirror image of pre-WWII Germany as it descended into Nazification. Did kicking Nazi butt help any, then, if America becomes the Fourth Reich?

It is pointless to speculate. What is important is to focus on the fact that Saddam just isn't very important compared to Al-Queda and Osama and finishing up our work over in Afghanistan. And to see War for what it is -- murder, plain and simple; to be used only as a last resort. "Violence is the Last Resort of the Incompetent," as the saying goes. Let us not be in such a haste to become murderers ourselves.

How would you explain the fact that there are far more Blacks and Hespanics as a % in your military than in your civilian population.
Linda_K perhaps you can answer this too,
(I think I'm up a question or 2 from you)

Edited to read Linda_K,
Sorry Helen,
I was part right, I knew it was K or KKK.

I'll take a guess then gonna go to bed

I don't know. I don't honestly know the 'racial' percentages of the military today.

Again, like someone else said... ITS VOLUNTARY.. no one forced ANYONE, black, white, red, purple or green to join.

nite

Can economic necessity be considered force?
Or don’t we count economic forces.

Don’t you get it,
To take the extreme, have you ever heard of a rich person selling a cheap kidney of their own?

How can anyone living in a capitalist economy, not understand why.

not exactly..but I'll stand corrected that although the racial balance of the military is not representative of the population, it's poor rural white soldiers who are most likely to die in combat.

As a REACTION to an attack by the South in a Cessionist(sp?) movemnet
World War 1 & 2 .....Stopped the Genocide of the Jewish
As a REACTION to the imperialist activities of the other side.
Made Allies of Germany and Japan to the USA
Ahh, yes...friends...bought and paid for...the best kind for the Neo-Conservatives
Korean War .....Liberated South Korea for Communism
As a REACTION to the the armed aggression of FELLOW koreans(there is no such thing as a North Korean or a South Korean, just Koreans who live in the North or the South)
Viet Nam........Stop the spread of Communism
Actually, it was to stop the immensely popular political movement of Ho Chi Minh, who didn't start out as a Communist, but he didn't support the rape of his country by the foreign powers. The Communists were the only ones who would support him(they wanted these guys out also). We, of course, supported the ultra-corrupt and extremely oppressive government, who would let us bulldoze the country into oblivion as long as we made regular desposit in their Swiis Bank Accounts. The longer the war would last, the more they would make and the holier-than-thou we would look....and the more young men would die in that meat-grinder
Afgan......slowed down Terror and still needs more time for a final outcome.
As a REACTION to physical acts of aggression committed by Al-Qada
