Affirmative action in reverse?

The sale held on Bruin Walk on Feb 3, offered cookies at different prices depending on the customer's race and gender. Black Latina and American Indian females were charged $.25 for cookies that cost males of minority descent $.50. White females were charged $1.00 and white males and all Asian Americans were charged $2.00.

Students selling the cookies were assigned name tags protraying them as "Uncle Tom," "The White Oppressor" and "Self-Hating Hispanic Race Traitors."

And this from Miami:

"North Miami City Councilman Jacques Despinosse created a bit of a stir Tuesday when he asked the police department to
rescind its swimming requirement for recruits because it eliminated many black candidates," the Miami Herald reports. " 'We can't swim,' said Despinosse, a Haitian American. 'Most of us didn't come on the Mayflower. We came on slave ships.' "

Hmm, didn't the late Al Campanis get fired awhile back for saying more or less the same thing?

Linda, the link won't work

what you wrote from the article, I don't think would be affirmative action in reverse, just plain bigotry.

Now wonder what my girls would do, if they charged them for the 'white female price' when they are actually half Cherokee? Good Lord what the h*ll is this world coming to?

and Bear, HUH, a Haitian American, living today said he came on a slave ship?

God what next?

NTS - Not sure why the link's not working for you. Just checked it and it's working fine for me. Sorry.

Since you can't view it basically here's what else it said:

The intent of the sale, Jones said, was to "bring the issue (of affirmative action) down to everyday terms. We wanted to show how affirmative action is racial division, not racial reconciliation."

As for the name tags of the vendors, Jones said many people would look at a black or Latino student taking part in a Bruin Republicans anti-affirmative action sale and either think to themselves or say out loud that the student is a traitor to his race. Therefore, the Bruin Republicans decided to "turn it on its head" and use the names themselves, before passers-by had a chance.

Jones asserted his objective was to incite discourse on the issue, not to provoke anger.
