"We did not bury our heads in the sand. We acknowledged freely our faults, and we've worked arm in arm toward fixing the problem rather than hiding from or denying the problem," said City Attorney John Russo.

Yeah, after they were caught dead to rights.

Despite the settlement's hefty price tag, Russo said the cases could have cost the city tens of millions of dollars more had they gone to trial, pointing out that the victims had spent more than 25 years, combined, imprisoned on false charges.

...Russo said the settlement "stands up" when compared with other cities' payouts in police cases.

Geez, can you find a more slimeball lawyer?

[Lawyers for the plaintiffs] estimate their clients together spent 40 years falsely imprisoned because they count time served for parole and probation violations stemming from the original false charge.

There's still one suit left from a guy who was falsely imprisoned for five years. 'Guess he decided not to "settle."

No, this isn't some third world, South American dictatorship. It's Oakland, California.

Twinsoft - the only time I ever see you post is when it comes to indictments of police departments. Just out of curiosity, why such a streamlined focus?

(BTW - considering that a friend is sitting in jail tonight for jaywalking without having his ID on him (wallet was lost last week) I'm not exactly pro police, just curious why you are so vehemently anti-police)
