"At least half a million people are believed to enter the EU illegally every year, but Mr Vitorino admitted he had no clear figures."

Apparently Europe has the same problem as the U.S. with ILlegal immigration. Immigration is not a bad thing IMO; it can benefit both countries in a number of ways.
But it must be a rationally controlled situation. Illegal immigration could be compared to "breaking in line" and is not fair to the ones playing by the rules. And while the developed nations shouldn't just take "the best and brightest" legal immigrants, neither can they afford to accept in all of the less fortunate members of the world at one time. It just won't work.
If we don't come up with a (world-wide) solution on this soon we'll probably be wishing that we had.

It has gotten so bad in Europe, the EU has quietly put in place a sea based interdiction unit that now patrols the Mediterranean for alien smugglers.
The poverty and disease in these third world nations is no worse than it ever was. So what is causing this many people to attempt illegal entry to industrialized nations?
I think it is satelite TV and movies. These people have access to images of the US and Europe that they never could have seen before. There are CNN broadcasts received in the most remote areas of the world, as well as cheap TVs, VCRs, and tapes to view.
Previous mass immigrations to the US were driven by the written word and word of mouth. It was also fueled by the railroads marketing "free" land, and industrialists needing labor competition.
No one immigrates thinking it will be the same or worse in the new region. Our images are inducing people as never before to come to the US and Europe, and the rest of the industrialized world.
