The Pope? Isn't he the head of that major child abuse association? The one that won't Prosecute the child molesters.
A wonderful man but he's living in the 12th century.
If the Church sold the treasures it has stowed away in the Vatican, it could feed the world. But they won't.
Amen,
Reverend Colin

junquemama - I'd like to understand why you'd even make a statement like 'Bush won't listen to the Pope's pleas'. Why would you expect that he might?

If catholic priests won't listen to the Pope about sexual abuse, why should President Bush listen to him about Iraq.

I made the statement because, the Pope has a lot of power, and millions listen to him.
When Bush ignores him, many Catholic Countrys will be watching.
Maybe we should just pezz everyone off, while we are in haste for war.

junquemama,
It's not hate. It's distaste. I was brought up Catholic.
I can see the end of the Catholic Church. Something they have done to themselves. Not in the last couple years but for the last 50 and more.
They have backed those that have committed unthinkable crimes against the young.
Go back a little farther and check Pope Pious XII. See how good he was to the Jews.
I know of older Priest's that have left the Church because of the new overweeningly gay priest that are coming in today.
It is not the church of old. It's a dying icon of days gone by.

Colin, and in your haste to relate distaste,of the Pope, you insult the Catholics that post to this board. Can you not "see" what you are saying?
posted on March 6, 2003 11:19:45 AM newI made the statement because, the Pope has a lot of power, and millions listen to him.
Millions may listen to him, but millions of catholics ignore what he is saying. They ignore him about abortion, birth control, confession, adultery, divorce, chastity, nearly everything he is against, his followers are for and actively practice.
The Pope has no power, and hasn't had any real power for centuries. The wealth of the catholic church is the only thing that weilds any power in Europe, and it is about to be stripped of a large chunk of its wealth in the US by the courts.

The Pope is a Symbol: a symbol for Peace. You have to remember that this Pope has inherited a church that has strayed and not kept up with modern times and he has done everything that he felt that he could to modernize the church. Just to admit that child rape was going on is an enormous step for the Church. This Pope has been a reformer who has healed the rifts between Jews and Catholics and Islam and Catholics as best as possible - recall that he forgave his won assassin - could you do that? After two thousand years of walking down its path, this Pope has done more for both the Catholic Church and for Humanity than any other I can think of. To bash him for not correcting two thousand years of grievances in a single lifetime is hypocritical of you people doing so. He is a good man and a smart one and he will be remembered as The Peacemaker and Reformer. His greatness is shielded by his humility; so don't be fooled when he politely asks Bush to give this more time.

Keeping up with "modern times" is what drove many from the church due to the Vatican II pronoucement. This is also the Pope that said of birth control and abortion, the church will never change.
Popes have never been a symbol of peace, they have been a symbol of heavenly and temporal power, of which both are waning. Their mistakes are as young as WWII when the Vatican shielded many Nazis.
To place the personage and power of the catholic churh singularly in the Pope is a mistake too. The Pope has very narrow avenues in which he can act without the OK of the catholic bureaucracy.
The Pope is for peace when it serves his purpose. He wasn't for peace when Poland was attempting to pull away from Russia in the Solidarity movement. It was even said he would show up in the front lines in full papal regalia to meet the Russian tanks with his fellow Poles.
