And for what -- for the privilege of letting the French opine on matters critical to U.S. national security? After we are through with Iraq, we need to bury the UN alongside the late League of Nations.

Go ahead. It will encourage other nations to support and hasten the development of a second Super Power to offset U.S. aggression.
By the way Bear, I gather you believe that free speech on this planet should only be limited to Americans only with foreigners being told what they are allowed to "opine" because after all Americans have more wealth so their views are the only important ones.
Carrying that analogy further, perhaps only the rich and upper middle class should be allowed to vote in American elections as they provide most of the tax revenues.

Irene made a very simple analogy...how dare those other European countries disagree with us, after we pour in so much money into the UN. It would be the same thing as saying that since the rich and upper middle class pay more taxes (donate more to the tax base), they should have more say, and how dare the poor disagree with their views.
Having said that, while I don't think we should go as far as burying the UN right now, I think we should definitely take a second look at our relationships with France and Germany. Where that would lead, who knows.
