I really wonder what Saddam was thinking when he refused to comply with President Bush's request to release control of Iraq.

With the strenght of the US Military and the Allies, it seems he made a very foolish mistake. The U.S. led coalition has demostrated it's superiority while in oppisiton to Saddam's under trained and under equiped pawns.

While the modern technology of the US Military has shown an ultimate superiority to Saddam's army, and with the amount of Iraqi troops that have already have made the choice to give up, I wonder if it will take very long for them to completely crumble and surrender.

He is a Madman...what more needs to be said!

Do you have a habit of asking someone on the street what their problem is because they are yelling to themselves...No you leave them alone, it is bad luck to mess with those people lifted from George Carlin

"Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both boldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar."

He is not crazy and he didn't underestimate the POWER of the US, he assessed the RESOLVE of the US and was wrong. For a decade everyone has been watching every 2 bit little squirt stick a stick in our eye and get away with it. Even know, the theory is he is having the Republican Guard stay in the cities so that there is more time for public opinion about innocent casualties to save him and his regime. Wrong President for that though.

DeSquirrel - You are so right. Resolve hasn't been there for quite a while. It's back....thank our lucky stars.

I firmly believe if Saddam hadn't seen all these anti-war protesters, hadn't seen the fear of many to take action against him, hadn't seen the willingness of the UN to work at containing him for 12 years....[and failing at it]....this would have been a much easier task.

Even Saddam saw how many American's were backing his country 'being invaded' and spoke of it with pride. Those who have done this will never 'see' how their actions made him feel even stronger....less willing to go into exile. He felt empowered with all those who supported him, even while they claim he does need to be removed.

edited to be more clear. He took GREAT pride in those American's he saw as being against their own country, and against the US invading and removing him.

kraft,

I think the point that Linda is trying to make that is the more Saddam sees protestors, both US and others, he feels more justified in his actions.

Just from CNN,

Several members of the Iraqi army were just captured by American Troops. The Americans were absolutely astonished. The Iraqis were driving a PINK TOYOTA PICKUP TRUCK HAVING A SMALL CALIBER MACHINE GUN, WITH A NEW YORK POLICE BUMPER STICKER ON IT.

Can you believe it?
