A colleague has a large comic book collection and wants to sell to me. I'm not familiar with comic books. Where could I get the value of the books from?

Best bet would be to go to a book store and get a pricing guide. the overstreet price guide to comic books is the most reliable guide I know of. It will cost you about $15. Barnes and Nobles usually will have them in stock. You can also pick them up off of e-bay but just be sure to get a current one.

Yes use the most current Overstreet guide and pay particular attention to condition if wanting to resell them, also remember it is just a guide to values, no dealer will give you "book" value unless it is a very rare copy...

good point about the prices. If you are looking to buy to sell as a profit I wouldn't give more than 25% to 30% of book price because you can probably only get about 40% to 50% book price, a little more on the hard to find ones. And as Twelve says pay VERY close attention to the grade. Comics books are looks at more closley than Sports cards for the serious collectors.

Thanks. The person wants $1 for each, so what you're telling me is that they're probably only worth 25% to 30% more if I resell?

I haven't seen the condition. We're talking via email.

If they were printed 1990 or later...maybe worth 10 cents each, if you are going to resell, unless some of the more popular ones are there but would need Overstreet and definately would have to be pristine copies.

I can't believve that no one has suggested this yet... Do some Ebay Completed Item searches on the list. That is going to be the best indicator. Rather than trying to figure out going percentaes of book, find out what the actual going price is.

If you are unaware of how to do this just do a regular search under title, issue, etc then click on COMPLETED ITEMS in the yellow tool bar on the the left. Once you have done this once, you have just continue on with new searches as usual, you will continue to get the completed search results until you hit the "View Active Items" link at the top of the search result list.

Yes, I did a search.
I also requested that the person give me the volume #, dates and titles. All they did was give me the names (i.e. Spiderman, Superman) Since I'm not a comic expert, I don't know about comic books. Maybe I should stay away?

Yea thats hard to tell without knowledge of the years. prints and conditions of the comics. Do you know the date ranges are they like 60's to present or all post 90 and the manufactures and prints have a lot to do with value. I most definaley would not give $1.00 a piece without more info. Of course if you overpay for 95% and get one rare gem well then it was a good deal. I'd try to get a list and then scan over the price guide to see what is says and to be safe just estimate 30% of book value for and you should see some resell profit. Comics are pretty dicey and serious collectors are very picky. Mabey you can get some 50's looney toon comics those can sell great. I lucked into a large lot of those and made a killing on them but it was more dumb luck thatn research.

That is not always the best either neon, as eBayers are pretty fadish on some issues and the climate can change over night...

But good thinking though, I never seem to remember to do that...
