Free Iraqi Forces soldier Ali, whose full name was withheld for security reasons, hugs a nephew he had never seen before as he is reunited with family members Saturday in Umm Qasr, Iraq. Ali, 40, a former officer in the Iraqi army, escaped from Iraq in 1991 after being involved in the Basra uprising and had been working as a taxi driver in St. Louis, Mo. He is serving in the Free Iraqi Forces, which are made up mostly of Iraqi exiles opposed to Saddam Hussein. They have been trained by coalition forces to help deliver humanitarian assistance in the country

I actually found this image whlle searching for a much more striking one shown on TV tonight of a Iraqi woman in a burka with hands on either side of an American soldiers face. The image itself is strong enough in and of itself but it was the title of the image, "Is it you?" and the explaination that really struck me. The soldier the woman is reaching out to turned out to in fact be her brother who had fled Iraq years earlier and who had returned with the US forces as a guide and interpreter.

The image was shown on NBC and although I have looked thru their slide shows, I have not yet found this particular one. If anyone comes across it, please let me know. It was such a strong beautiful image I would really like to have it.

edited to add: Could someone please fix my faulty code so the image shows [ edited by neonmania on Apr 8, 2003 04:45 AM ]

I had to wait to post until I saw the photo - another beautiful one! Stories such as these make me really, really proud to be an American
