A good friend of mine Jane, moved to a great neighbourhood last fall. Her backyard is on a cliff that overlooks the Thames River - it's quite a stunning view. Her next door neighbours seemed friendly until yesterday, when their daughter, who lives in the basement with her 2 kids, reemed Jane out for obstructing her basement window view of Jane's back yard. She told Jane that the whole family has been mad at ther for months because they can't see the view when my she (Jane) hangs out her laundry. The problem is, that Jane's going to be putting up a 6" wooden fence along that side of the house, so nobody will be able to see anything in her backyard. Now she's afraid to put up the fence. I've checked the by-laws and she's within her right to put up anything she wants, but of course, her new neighbours will probably never talk to her again. Any ideas I can give her to make her feel better?? (Thanks!)

There's nothing like a neighborhood quarrel. I would move the clothes line that obstructs the view or buy a dryer and forget the fence.
Otherwise, Like George Bush, she will win the battle but lose the war.

If these people re so self centered that they object to an occasional short term blockage of their view because a neighbor does laundry on their own property she is better off not having them in her life at all.
I hope and pray that my neighbors will someday stop speaking to me.

You win some & you lose some - I am sure that when you friend purchased the property she kept no thought of the how new community/neighborhood would react.
As for the neighbors, NO INVESTMENTS of thiers went into your friend's property & therefore she shouldn't worry or even care. Unfortunately, there isn't much she can do to "make peace" with her neighbors so tell her to TOUGHEN UP. They most likely will become aggressive, and try to intimidate her using large obscene words/gestures to try & make her regret her purchase. She should set some rules - this should be her DREAM HOME - NOT A NIGHTMARE. Tell her to TRY to talk to her neighbors about maybe setting her clothes certain days...yet that still won't resolve her fence problem. Consider getting a sheriff / cop to explain the sitution to her neighbors about who's in charge (and what's allowed). Maybe hearing the facts from someone else would help them face reality.
All I can tell her is as she writes the mortgage payment, to remember it's HER property and that payment is her hard earned cash - not theirs. To enjoy what's hers while she can!!

High five on the Bush comment Helen!
Well, the fence is going up next week regardless, so this girl will be able to have a great view of wood planks. Right-of-view laws don't pertain to someone else's back yard, so she's screwed. I guess I'm just venting... thanks for talking to me.

HELENJW - "Otherwise, Like George Bush, she will win the battle but lose the war." -
Still bitter?...can you say LOSER!! If you didn't live in the states (or one where freedom reigns) YOU WOULDN'T have much of a comment (most likely not even a computer). Freedom is what Iraq is now enjoying (maybe not as fully as our beloved USA but freedom). That is, thanks to men like G. Bush...your comments are heard as a cry for ATTENTION. You, ARE enjoying the rights of "FREEDOM" - if in Iraq under the past regime of Saddam - you'd be hung, tortured, etc for commenting ANYTHING political.

Tell her to spend the exta money and put up a 12'foot fence.
That way the people upstairs couldn't see either!
If they're all going to be mad at you give all of them something to be mad about.
Tell her to take pic's and send to them, so they can see what they're missing!

guru - please use your computer to do a little reasearch regarding the advancements of technology thruout the world.

This has got to be one of the most blantantly ignorant statements I have read in awhile. It amazes me how completely blind some people are to the world around them.
( BTW - for those that were reading Salam Pax's blog from Bagdhad prior to the war - he's back up with an update that includes what was going on during the days he was offline....

Helen - this part was strangely amusing....
They ( Coalition forces) are like that in most of the cases, they sit looking a bit bored watching the looting. Sometimes, if it is not too troublesome, they will go check on what is happening if you jump in front of their tanks shouting “Ali Baba, Ali Baba!!”. Cute, isn’t it? We have found common ground in the stories of 1001 nights. Everybody knows the story of Ali Baba and the 40 thieves, but not everybody speaks English. So if you are lucky the Americans will come to check what Ali Baba is doing, sometimes they care sometimes they don’t
I guess it's the mental picture of Iraqi citizens running up to armed military member yelling "Ali Babba!" and the moment that it fiirst clicks in the soldier/marines head what they are trying to say.

Thanks everyone!

neonmania: "This has got to be one of the most blantantly ignorant statements I have read in awhile. It amazes me how completely blind some people are to the world around them."
- I was actually referring to less fortunate enviroments whereas if you do not have $$$$ (top-notch job or goverment connection) - you're out of luck. (ex: Cuba...)
It's fair to mention that I have traveled overseas including Middle East to visit relatives - (leaving my loved USA long enough) to understand that there are MANY cultures, religions, and all. I've mentioned before that I am part ARABIAN & married to CUBAN ~ Reading the sh*t that is typed here makes me laugh aloud - the nonsense spoken - Most of it spoken from people whom can only get their inormation through articles!!! - I dare say they have never even traveled out of US!!! I know first hand of all the sh*t that I've lived/seen - not just read...
I am not crazy to say that technology has been & is a part of everday living - in every enviroment...but, it's fair to advise, in sections such as Iraq - you'd have to be a "computer geek/brain" (no offense) to manage to speak about politics freely (or post a journal) & not put your life in danger.
Don't misunderstand me NEO - I think Helenjw just needs a reality check - sorry if YOU don't agree butI know many others will agree.. Helenjw just strikes me as a person that would vote for appearance rather than a true leader (she probably voted for CLINTON - right? - THAT WAS OUR BIGGEST MISTAKE YET..)

Coming from people such as yourself, so obvioulsy well educated and well traveled with as you say, an "understanding that there are MANY cultures, religions ,and all," your observation just knocks my socks off, guru. At least, since you are laughing, we have entertainment value and believe it or not, so do you.

Krafty - you are known to share some of the same "bias" opinions as Helenjw - which by the way, is correct to say we all have a sense of humor...
Reality: Shedding light on that fact that Bush did an excellent job & that had it not been for a LEADER(s) (like Bush & our brave soldiers) - Iraq wouldn't have ever known the taste of freedom. I am actually good to say that everyone & anyone can post a thread with ANY opinion they'd like but they're sure to expect a response in return in disagreement.
I expose myself to comments noting that I am an ARAB descendant -but I am worry-free since as noted I don't just jot what I read in a headline or through some crazed report. If a reporter/journalist is not a fluent speaker/reader, stories are sure to change. I must say that translations are misunderstood or not always the best - certain words have more than one meaning - especially in Arab or Spanish language.
Anyhow, I'd love to stay & chat but as a mother of 3 (soon-to-be 4) - I am off to start dinner -ANY POST AFTER this one WILL be answered later - I am not trying to avoid anyone...I have fun & hopefully I will avoid falling within the the circle of "tag" or "lil'name calling" cults created on Vendio's "round Table" (lol)

???? What the hell has this got to do about a fence? My vote is to put the fence up. If the other one does not like the lack of a view she is more than welcomed to buy her own place thats higher than a basement.

The neighbor, whose view is being obstructed, could build a second floor addition to her house. Then, she could look down on Jane's back yard and out at sea.

kraft- you apparently neglected to tell us that your friend Jane is a nudist, hence the neighbor's animosity.
Baghdad Helen- you should know better than to open the political door, even so slightly, in a non-political thread.
fashionguru- shame on you for being baited by Helen in this thread. As much as I differ with her anti-American posts(despite her typical liberal claims to the contrary), making every thread political turns off many here to enjoying the occasional light-hearted thread diversions from a now even more serious world.

KD tell your friend to tell her neighbor, she is free to install a security camera over looking the canyon & wire it into her television. When they want to see the view, turn on the TV.
Helen, still in a mood, huh?
Well we'll just have to guess who will be the next president of the US won't we. (NOT)

Yes, I agree I'm bias on many things fashionguru, but my thoughts aren't set in stone. I at least try to listen to all sides before I post my uneducated responses.
As for Helen, she's changed. I agree that she used to be crabby to people, but only to those she felt were back-stabbing her. You can understand that. Give her a second chance... she's actually quite fun now, whether you agree with her views on Bush or not.
