I came close to having the front end of my Jeep removed by some dumb woman with a cell phone glued to her ear. What she didn't see was: #1 her red light, #2 me coming through my green light, and #3 the cop right behind me. HA! Busted. Thank goodness I was alert enough to see what was coming and slam on my brakes. I stopped, went over to where the cop had her pulled over when he motioned me to and her excuse? She was arguing on the phone with her husband! When I finally got back into my car and stopped at the next main intersection light, I decided to count the number of cars that passed and the number of people in those cars with a cell phone glued to their heads. Out of 13 cars, six of the drivers were on the phone! That's six too many in my book. So, if you must talk on the phone while you are in your car do us all a favor - PULL OVER! The life you save may be mine.

LOL! I say that at least once every day.
A telephone is certainly a dispensable distraction while driving.
It's difficult to determine the number of phone related accidents because
people who are involved in an accident may not admit that they were using
a phone when the accident occured.

They say that wireless phone use while in the car caused as many accidents and deaths as drunk driving.
So either make the penalties the same or legalize drunk driving.
In New York right now it is just a simple and cheap fine and you are back on the road to do it again. The penalty is too small to even to begin to stop cell phone use while driving.

Drivers using cell phones are a clear danger to everybody...having said that, cell phones have saved my backside more than once. We have really good signals out here for some reason, even tho' we're 35 miles from anywhere. One call has rescued me from truck breakdowns, lame horses, you name it. Now that my son is old enough to ride out by himself, he carries a phone with him all the time. I wouldn't want to be without one.

I carry my phone in my car for use in emergencies only. Geeze, I get away from the house to get away, not to take phone calls. If I need to use the phone because I am lost or running late, I pull over. In Brooklyn, OH it is against the law and the penalties, from what I hear, are steep. In Cleveland, it's perfectly legal to endanger the lives of others while fighting on the phone with your husband. I don't know what she got in the way of a ticket, but I hope reckless driving was one of them. I laugh because this is the first time someone has driven like an idiot around me and the police were right there! What a dope.

When I lived in LA I was in my car up to 24 hours a week. I had a cell phone in my ear and a tape reorder on the dash at all times- the car was actually where I was able to get most of my business stuff done since no one was coming in asking me to take a look at this or can I fix that. I got a hands free unit early on and never had any problems. The tape recorder was great for taking notes and numbers - instead of having to write down something that was being given to me I just hit record when I was repeating the info back. The only problem was those times I forgot to turn it off and caught my off key but enthusiastic car singing on tape

Going down the expressway in light traffic I'll take a short call. But on a surface street with lights and cross streets and people pulling out in front of you I know I can't pay close enough attention to both so I answer and say hold on - and pull off the next lot or side street to take the call.
I stopped at a light behind a small car full of teenage girls recently. All of them were talking on a cell phone to someone else. Why even bother to be together?

I love the kids here who walk together in groups in the street and they are all on cell phones. Now that's what I call a group outing.
