WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. unemployment rate fell in July for the first time in more than a year but employers chopped 44,000 jobs, the government said on Friday in a report that painted a mixed economic picture amid other signs of a rebound.

The jobless rate slid to 6.2 percent last month from 6.4 percent, the Labor Department said. The decline was caused by an exodus of people from the labor force, not by any surge in hiring.

The rate is calculated based on the number of people on unemployment insurance. When benefits run out as they have for many whether they are extended or not those people who have been on unemployment for 6 months or more are no longer counted. It is assumed that since they have been on unemployment for so long they are no longer looking for a job.

Maybe they found alternative means of self empoloyment

You appear surprised, reamond. Maybe it's all the doom and gloom you read about here that has you convinced otherwise. I'm just glad it's not continuing to rise.
--------

When Congress was debating the issue of extending un-employment benefits, I remember reading that stats showed most people find jobs within the two week period of their benefits ending. That was the argument being used by those who were against extending them. [That it would only put off the 'hurry' for many to find employment.] Who knows.

Despite a fall in the unemployment rate to 6.2%, equities sold-off following a disappointing 44,000 decline in non-farm payrolls and remained rangebound for most of the day, before late-day selling pushed stocks to near session lows by the close.

It turns out that the jobless rate fall wasn't from getting jobs, but from taking people off "the List". Not a good sign....

Again, there is an effort to use inadequate data to misrepresent the status of the economy. And CNN and the Washington Times gave it their best shot.

Democratic Gov. Mark Warner of Virginia blamed Bush's "massive tax cuts" for the rising federal deficits

and for forcing states to cut vital services.

"Right now, this nation is on track for the worst job creation record since the Great Depression.

No president since Herbert Hoover 70 years ago has actually lost jobs over the course of his term," Warner said.

Don't worry. Expect job creation to begin soon. IT may be called the "draft" but it will create jobs.

Then maybe the Bush supporter will change their tune as their friends and family are now forced to kill innocents and acquire more territory for PNAC and the regime...

News Flash: In a new CNN/Gallop Poll 100% of all Americans back President Bush's policies for both domestic and foriegn affairs. For the purpose of the poll anyone agreeing with Bush was considered to be an American. Those that disagree are not counted.

They became telemarketers...lots of job security there...

Worse, they've become scam emailers. Phishing for opportunity on the web. As the economic engine fizzles the crime rate rises. I've also noticed many oppportunities open up in recycling, orange sales are also brisk at the onramp by the freeway.

Prof - Actually the joke was in referrence to posts I made in the job exportation thread where I named other things that displaced workers can do to earn a living. Of course I was informed that these ideas are "bunk" and a "crock". I guess the fact that my landlord will be recieving rent backed by funds generated from those activities is irrelevent.

In answer to your question about who would become a telemarketer...when I was much younger I loved to move around and check out new places. I could walk into any telemarketing office and have a job the next day, it was a check every Friday while I looked for something I really wanted to do. While working there I met a number of different people. A battered wife who was working while her kids were at school to save up the money to leave her husband. Recently terminated middle management types just trying to keep above water on the bills while they found new jobs, lots of students trying to make a few extra bucks, etc. Most of the rooms were a about evenly mixed between people for whom telemarketing was merely a ramp to something else they were trying to accomplish and those that considered it a perfectly good job and for whom it was a final stop - those were always the ones that made me wonder. I have a feeling that today those numbers are much more lopsided and that turn over rates are thru the roof. I seriously doubt there are going to be "lay-offs" in the telemarketing field as a result of the DNC list. More than likely they will just stop hiring replacements for those that naturally fall out.

fenix,

"If it's really Common Sense, why do so few people actually have it?"

When you were young, anybody with a warm body could walk into a telemarketers office and "have a job the next day."

Now, there will be fewer people employed in telemarketing.

Helen - Isn't that what I said? ::glacing towards final sentence in last post::: Sure as hell, I did say that as the DNC list goes into effect telemarketing companies will stop hiring replacements for those the drop off.

Yes, fenix...

You made a very profound conclusion, backed up by your extensive personal experience.

Very good.

Bite me Helen. What's wrong Linda isn't around as much, feeling a little low in the self esteem department so you needed to find someone new to prop yourself up with by being condescending to? Sorry if I sight personal experiences too much for your taste, but then there's always that ignore feature if it's really a problem for you.

BTW - I think you will find that in another thread Prof had specifically asked what type of people do telemarketing - I just gave him a delayed response.

Good grief,

What a silly thing to say when I'm bending over backwards to be especially nice to you. I have no need to bolster my feelings of self esteem. But when you continuously provide these little self serving posts, it does appear that you are attempting to bolster yours. Try to remember that we have all been able to stay employed, just like you and pay our rent, just like you. And hot dam! we all pay our bills and save money just like you.

You are full of it.

enough.

At least the Who Me? is amusing. Why would you "bend over backwards to be especially nice" to me. Has there been a diagnosis I was unaware of?

I'm not propping myself up stating experiences. I am simply giving ideas that work and that I know work because I have tried them. Isn't that how you help people? You use personal experience and knowledge that you have gained to assist them in find the prosperous paths? Why is that such a problem for you?

LOL....Yes, and it's a Democratic presidential candidate that's suggesting that nonsense...not a Republican.
