US Customs department has put a temporary hold on all auctions of seized vehicles while they are re-searched.
Monday in San Diego a 12 year old girl was found ditting in the van she was being smuggled across the border in when it was seized two days earlier. The van was seized after another woman was found in the dash but the young girl was not found in another compartment under the drivers seat before the van was locked away in a wherehouse. Luckily the girl was able to get the compartment open so that she could be found.
Meanwhile a 25 year old Chula Vista resident has been in a Tijuana jail for the past month and faces 15 years in jail after Mexican officials found 33 pounds of potin a secret capartment built into in his car. He bought the car at a Customs Department auction following it's seizure after officials found 100 pounds of marijuana hidden in the bumper.
All vehicles are now being reexamined using dogs and portable x-ray machines but not surprisingly, customs officials are not saying if additional contriband has been found.

Linda - apparently this is a pro operation. The vehicles are specially customized and then a third party is hired to drive the car across the border. In this case the driver had no idea what was being smuggled, he was just paid $300 to drive the car across the border and to a parking lot. Driver had no idea when they took the car that there was still a little girl under his seat.

UPDATE - The Chula Vista man mentioned earlier that was released today after a Tijuana judge dropped all charges agreeing that the marijuana was most likely in the car when he bought it.
Now I'm just waiting for a gross negligence law suit against the Customs Department.

Kind of difficult since he was charged in Mexico where he has no jurisdiction and there is no death penalty.
