Federal grand jury indicts 91-year-old man in bank robbery Associated Press

LUBBOCK -- A federal grand jury handed up an indictment Wednesday of a 91-year-old Goldthwaite man accused of robbing an Abilene bank on Tuesday.

J.L. Hunter "Red" Rountree, in jail in Abilene on $150,000 bond, is scheduled to make an initial appearance next week in Lubbock, U.S. Attorney Jane Boyle said.

The one-count indictment charges Rountree with robbing $1,999 on Tuesday from the First American Bank. About an hour later, he was arrested as he was driving through Lawn, 20 miles south of Abilene, on his way back to Goldthwaite, which is 110 miles southeast of Abilene.

Rountree had all the money with him when he was taken into custody, Sgt. Mike Perry of the Abilene Police Department said on Tuesday.

Someone saw the vehicle that Rountree got into after leaving the bank, and gave the license plate number to authorities.

Rountree has twice before been sentenced for bank robbery.

On Dec. 9, 1998, one week before his 87th birthday, Rountree was arrested in Biloxi, Miss., minutes after he robbed a bank. He was eventually given three years probation, fined $260 and told to leave Mississippi.

Less than a year later, in October 1999, he was arrested outside a NationsBank in Pensacola, Fla., after telling a teller, "Give me the $100s." He was convicted of bank robbery and sentenced to three years in prison, becoming the oldest inmate in the Florida prison system.

He probably can't buy his medication on social security and keeps going back to prison to be taken care of. I've seen people come off the street in the winter to the jail when the shelters were full to get a warm place and a peanut butter sandwich.
