Maternity and Stock markets -- You might think the two have about as much in common as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carrot Top.
Well, get ready for Terminator 4: Rise of the Curly Orange Afro.
See, in the September 1999 Elliott Wave Theorist, Bob Prechter presented a chart illustrating the relationship between births and stock prices.
Take a look.
As you can see, maternity and the market actually go together like birds and bees. Bob said this to subscribers:
“Notice that the deepest low in births this century came in 1933, the year after the deepest low in the stock market this century… Why would there be a one-year lag… Well, can you think of any activity that always precedes a birth by about a year?”
Um… Exactly!
Bob explains how social mood, as reflected by the trends of the stock market, affects the extent to which couples en mass are -- well -- in the mood:
“[In a bull market] when aggregate feelings of friskiness, daring and confidence wax, people engage in more sexual activity with the aim of having children. When these feelings wane [a bear market], so does the desire for generating offspring.”
That’s why the June 2001 EWT made the following prediction in conjunction with it’s forecast for a falling stock market: “If you want to have kids, hurry up. [Pretty soon] you won’t feel much like it.”
