Greatest US president since Abe Lincoln. Mark my words. Among Bush's achievements will be the spread of democracy in the Middle East, starting in Iraq and having a domino effect. In 5-10 years, the current regimes of North Korea and Iran will be gone. Conservative replacements in the Supreme Court will ban abortion. Dominant US military power will discourage other nations from challenging us. Al Quaida will wither away and eventually die. The US economy will be strong and the national debt will shrink. And the Democrats will become a permanant minority party. Mark my words.

Bush will be the only American President who ends up being led away from office in chains for crimes against humanity.

Ebayauctionguy's Dreams aside, What's really happening.

Families Live in Fear of Midnight Call by US Patrols

NEVER again did families in Baghdad imagine that they need fear the midnight knock at the door.

But in recent weeks there have been increasing reports of Iraqi men, women and even children being dragged from their homes at night by American patrols, or snatched off the streets and taken, hooded and manacled, to prison camps around the capital.

Children as young as 11 are claimed to be among those locked up for 24 hours a day in rooms with no light, or held in overcrowded tents in temperatures approaching 50C (122F).

U.S. Recruiting Hussein's Spies
Occupation Forces Hope Covert Campaign Will Help Identify Resistance
Washington Post Foreign Service
Sunday, August 24, 2003; Page A01

BAGHDAD, Aug. 23 -- U.S.-led occupation authorities have begun a covert campaign to recruit and train agents with the once-dreaded Iraqi intelligence service to help identify resistance to American forces here after months of increasingly sophisticated attacks and bombings, according to U.S. and Iraqi officials.

The extraordinary move to recruit agents of former president Saddam Hussein's security services underscores a growing recognition among U.S. officials that American military forces -- already stretched thin -- cannot alone prevent attacks like the devastating truck bombing of the U.N. headquarters this past week, the officials said.

U.S. Soldiers short on Rifles

The soldiers based around Baqouba are from an armor battalion, which means they have tanks, Humvees and armored personnel carriers. But they are short on rifles.

"We just do not have enough rifles to equip all of our soldiers. So in certain circumstances we allow soldiers to have an AK-47. They have to demonstrate some proficiency with the weapon ... demonstrate an ability to use it," said Lt. Col. Mark Young, commander of the 3rd Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 4th Infantry Division.

For Al Qaeda, Iraq May Be the Next Battlefield

BEIRUT, Aug. 25 (CSM) -– Jihad in Iraq (news - web sites)? The devastating Al Qaeda-style suicide bombing of the United Nations (news - web sites) headquarters in Baghdad has given new heft to declarations by US officials that there is mounting evidence of Islamist fighters crossing Iraq's borders.

Another dream deferred - for at least 12 years, Ebayauctionguy,

Estimate for 2004 Deficit Is Increased to $480 Billion

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The federal government is heading toward a record $480 billion deficit in 2004 and will rack up red ink of almost $1.4 trillion over the next decade, according to the latest analysis by the Congressional Budget Office.

``It is clear that these estimates will provide yet more evidence of the nation's fiscal deterioration under the irresponsible tax cut and spending policies of the Bush administration,'' said Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota, top Democrat on the Senate Budget Committee.

House Budget Committee Democrats said their analysis shows that the deficit will hit $495 billion in 2004, and will never go below $300 billion in the 2004-2013 period, reaching a total over the decade of $3.7 trillion.

The CBO report confirms earlier estimates that the federal deficit for this fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, will be $401 billion, well above the previous record deficit of $290.4 billion set in 1992. A deficit of $401 billion would represent nearly 4 percent of the size of the U.S. economy.

Many economists consider percentage of the gross domestic product to be a significant measure of the government's ability to afford its debt. Some Republicans argue that because the economy is so much larger today, $10.5 trillion, the budget shortfall has less of an impact.

This Mid-East paper is speculating about the possibility of American defeat in Iraq. Some of the translation is hilarious.

"The countries of the region have the right to gloat over the U.S. arrogance. But they must not celebrate too fast. The American defeat, in case it happens, does not necessarily mean the victory of Iraq or the safety of its neighbors. We are still in the first flickers of a fire that could turn the Iraqi scene into a hostage of what is worse than "Lebanonization" or "Afghanization." We stand at the beginning of the "Iraqi threat."

Afghanistan is Another disaster

Critics say the United States may be paying the price for committing only around 10,000 soldiers to Afghanistan compared with about 136,000 in Iraq.
The United States and other Western countries do not want to get sucked into a long-term guerrilla war in Afghanistan. Afghans argue that unless they are prepared to commit more and take more risks, that is precisely what will happen.

The Taliban regime is now back in business and has stepped up attacks on government forces. Opposition to these attacks may weaken if the Afghan people feel U.S. forces and the international community in general are not doing enough to provide security and fulfil promises to help revive the war-shattered economy.
